Biomedical Sciences Personal Statement

I have chosen to apply for biomedical science course. I have made this choice because I am very interested in following up a career in the health service. Since I was at school I have found science stimulating and challenging subjects particularly in biology and chemistry. As my knowledge in science has developed more I have become more attracted to further my studies in these subjects. I regularly read new researches and findings that are on the news or magazines such as the ‘’Biological Reviews’’ to increase my knowledge of today’s biological world and medical biology.

I am currently studying BTEC National Certificate in applied science I have studied several units which also include practicles and experiments. These units include assignments such as units in forensic science, perceptions in science, practical chemical analysis, microbiological techniques and human physiology. In chemistry I have covered units that include experiments in which I have made the drug aspirin. This has significantly improved my confidence in the laboratory based experiments and my practical skills. I am also studying A level biology after having successfully completed the AS OCR course. Additionally I studied key skills in IT, Communication and also Financial Studies. I have developed skills such as word processing making spreadsheets, power point and using Excel. I found that these have been invaluable contribution to my studies. I believe that these skills I have learned will also be precious to my studies in the university and I hope to continue broadening my skills and knowledge. Studying these courses has taught me to work under pressure and meet deadlines. I am fully confident that I can achieve the best possible grades that I want to attain.

My interest in biomedical science has been intensified when I have made several visits in universities, for instance, a 7 day course in university experience in which I have stayed the whole week in the university and participated in university lectures. I have had conversation with students who were currently studying at the university and lecturers about university life, subjects such biological sciences and medical related subjects. Furthermore I also went to open days in local universities. I think these visits will have given me an insight of university life. The whole experience reinforced my desire to go university to study biomedical science.

I am an active and extrovert person. I enjoy playing football. I have played for a Sunday league team such as Small Heath Starts which represented the Somali Community. I also played for Aston Community Club. Currently I play for Aston Youth Football Club. I became Footballer Of The Year, and Sports Man Of The Year after helping my school reach the finals.

I also have also done a week of work experience at Nechells Community Leisure Centre. In this week I have dealt with different ethnics which enabled me to co-operate with People of different backgrounds. I have been given responsibilities such as setting up sports equipments ready for customers, being on time before customers. I have also been taught about safety rules in the leisure and welcome customers. I relish the opportunity in studying biomedical science. I believe I will gain versatile scientific skill. It will also enable me to increase my knowledge in the field Biomedical I also believe I have the ability and determination to achieve my ambition in working and helping people within the health service.
