Business and Computing Personal Statement

My first memory was the desire to open up the computer and see what was inside. That childish fascination has not left me but has deepened over the years; now after 17 years I have not only built and upgraded many computers but have discovered that software interests me equally as much

I enjoy researching new developments in the IT industry. Recently I have been learning visual basic and am now looking into .net applications. I believe that furthering my education at university would offer me the opportunity to gain extra knowledge and present me with the tools to supplement my research. As part of my A-levels I choose to undertake business studies along with computers. I find both extremely interesting and enjoy drawing parallels between them. I believe business and computers are so closely integrated that studying a course linking both is the route for me to follow

After taking lifesaving classes for 3 years I achieved RLSS Bronze Medallion and Award of Merit, along with many others recognised awards. After these awards had been gained I felt the desire to share my gained knowledge, and I volunteered to teach lifesaving - I have now gained my teaching qualifications and teach a rookie class every Saturday morning. Once I began teaching lifesaving I realised that I enjoyed the interaction with the children so then progressed to becoming a voluntary sailing instructor where I have been presented with even more demanding situations

My desire to be challenged was fulfilled when I joined the Scouting Association at a young age. I have worked my way through the sections and am now the treasurer of a Venture Scout Unit. Much of my individuality was developed through opportunities arising out of the scouts, such as the Chief Scouts Challenge whereby long expeditions had to be undertaken. Through these expeditions I gained an interest in hill walking, and now take part in personal outings on a regular basis. Recently I walked in Scotland and took part in the Mourne Marathon. Scouting has also helped me to become independent as now I have the knowledge and expertise to fend for my self and others in most situations

Being a prefect is one of many roles that I contribute to the school

I was a member of the magazine committee were I helped with many tasks and took on the role of sports editor. Working on the committee involved a huge input from all, and very quickly we evolved into a functional team. A school trip to Cork, which was cross community, involving two schools from the North of Ireland and one from Southern Ireland hosted each other in turn. Plenty of enriching activities throughout the hosting period taught us a great deal and many friendships were created

Task Software/ Consilium technologies hosted me for my work experience placement. This gave me a fantastic insight into the software industry and also a valuable experience as to how a business functions. The marketing and sales department were only a few of the departments that I had the experience of being a part of through the duration of the week

Downpatrick has a famous racecourse and over the years I have worked up to a position of responsibility whereby I setup and manage the computers for the tote. On top of this I have to recruit part time staff and deal with sums of money along with the general public

I am looking forward to the challenges of working in Higher Education and to pursue my keen interest in Computing.
