Chemistry Personal StatementChemistry is fundamental to several vital processes in our world that we can take for granted: the development of medicine, the sourcing of energy and the cultivation of crops are some of the essential actions from which we benefit in our everyday lives. Its importance to us and influence on our lives is what interests me about Chemistry. I am keen to study Chemistry in depth to learn more about it and how it affects us. I feel that I would make an excellent candidate for a Chemistry degree course due to my enthusiasm for the subject which has grown since I started studying Chemistry three years ago. Its practical applications and need for rational thinking appealed to me and gave me the desire to study it at a higher level. Throughout my time in Secondary School I have taken advantage of a number of opportunities made available to me. Recently I have expressed an interest in running a Science Cafe in my school. This involves a team of pupils inviting guest speakers to give an informal talk to pupils of all ages about different aspects of Science. My role of Cafe Coordinator involves organising and planning the day of the talk. For me, this Cafe is a chance to mix my passion for science with teamwork. It allows other pupils to gain an interest in science and learn more about it, which is something I feel strongly about. It also allows me to build on my communication and teamwork skills, which would benefit me during practical work. I employed those skills and also my logical nature when I competed in a Mathematics challenge for teams from various schools, which I greatly enjoyed. For four years, I was a member of my school's Student Council. My role as a Class Representative enabled me to put forward the views of my peers to senior staff about how they felt our school could be improved. I also worked with other Representatives to establish a recycling campaign for my school. This activity let me demonstrate my cooperation and communication skills whilst making me aware of the importance of recycling. Additionally, I helped to organise school fun days with other Representatives, which enabled me to put my planning skills to good use. I have also taken part in various fundraising activities for a range of charities, including performing in a Christmas concert for elderly people in the community. In my fourth year of Secondary School, I completed a week-long work placement at a major organisation's offices as an administration assistant. During my time there I gained experience of working under pressure, both individually and with my colleagues. I also developed my ICT and organisational skills. My role gave me a sense of responsibility and some tasks I found difficult but I was more than willing to rise to the challenge. Outside of school, my main passion is music. I have played violin for nine years. For three years, I have played in an orchestra with other string players my age. My experience with the orchestra has taught me about the importance of teamwork, discipline and precision. I have also been teaching myself to play guitar over the last four years. Playing musical instruments has developed my creativity and my sense of accuracy. It lets me display my perseverance as I practise until I am content with my performance of a piece. Pursuing a degree in Chemistry would enable me to understand how reliant we are on chemical knowledge and utilise the skills I have developed. I would like to take up a career where I can put such knowledge and skills to good use in a way that would be beneficial to others. Universities Applied to:
