Creative writing and media studies degree personal statement example (1a) international applicant

This is a real personal statement written by a student for their university application. It might help you decide what to include in your own. There are lots more examples in our collection of sample personal statements.

My interest in Media and Music journalism comes from my passion in creating, editing and publishing music articles - I enjoy writing music reviews, publishing them on my webpage and receiving feedback from my readers. I regularly read an website about the Slovak media world; analysis of television, radio and the Internet. What is more, international blogs offer me the latest information about music, media, technology, fashion, design and advertising. Writing became a passion of mine as my range of reading increased. My favourite author is Slovak Michal Hvorecky, whose novels deal with the life of young people, their addictions and influence of advertisements on them. Thanks to the Internet and this book, I have become very interested in online advertising and viral marketing.

In December 2006, I began to write my own music blog, expressing my opinions about the music I listen to. At first, I was not satisfied with the style of my statements but it improved with every new article. Furthermore, a few months ago I wrote an email to a new music webzine and since October I have been a contributor, regularly writing reviews on newly released albums, and being rewarded with the promo records as payment.

I have many hobbies and interests, all of which contributed to the person I am today. My biggest passion is music, listening to it several hours every day. Moreover, every time I am abroad I spend all my money on English music magazines (there are no music magazines in Slovakia) such as NME, Q and Mojo. I am passionate about the contemporary literature, where not only storytelling but also inner world of the characters plays a very important role. As an example, I can mention Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. Reading such literature made me a more open-minded person and also had an impact on my vocabulary. It even inspired me to try to write some short stories. Due to other hobbies such as photography, theatre and watching films I became a more sensitive and creative person.

I also like sports, two in particular. Firstly, I am keen on skiing. The feeling of speed that only I can control is brilliant; secondly, my family and I relish walking in the forests and reaching the tops of the hills. I skate and play football with my friends in summer. Doing sport is, for me, a social activity where I learn to co-operate with others whilst being able to concentrate on a certain goal. At school, as well as working individually on projects and homework, I am expected to work in groups with other students. Due to this I am able to work co-operatively, lead a team, work to meet deadlines and under stress, and be both independent and responsible. In addition, last year I won an essay competition about using money from the EU funds for Slovakia. I won a journey to Strasbourg to European Parliament and was awarded some amount of money. Since October I have been the member of the literary society, which helped me improve my oral expression. Over the last few years, I attended a student exchange with a school in Germany twice. Spending ten days in a foreign environment was an excellent opportunity to improve language and to know the lifestyle of German youngsters, and I can now speak German fluently.

The subjects I currently study are closely related to writing, languages and the media world. I learn English and German, Slovak language and literature, geography, mathematics, PE and civics. In civics we learn about economics, psychology, philosophy, sociology and law. All my experiences and the subjects I study made me a suitable candidate for university.

I think studying at a British university is the perfect opportunity for me to study. Every new situation is a challenge for me and I believe I can bring much to the courses . Outstanding facilities and great student support persuaded me and I try my best to achieve. My dream is to work as a music journalist in the area of new media, and to study Media and Music journalism will be an important step to allow me to achieve this.
