Diagnostic Radiography Personal StatementAs my A-level choices indicate, I am hugely passionate about science. I have a love of technology and I am completely fascinated by the sheer complexity of it; especially the technological advancements within the medical sector such as x-rays and ultrasound. I am extremely enthusiastic about the work of radiographers, and especially diagnostic radiographers are an inspiration to me. A degree in radiography contains a combination of science and technology which makes it the perfect course and career choice for me because I like to put the knowledge I have learnt into practice. Spending time during my summer holidays at the University Hospital of Wales has confirmed my belief in wanting to become a diagnostic radiographer in the future. Although I have done previous research about what a degree in radiography entails, I did not appreciate it until after the experience. The large number of patient x-rays per day has made me realise that radiographers play a vital role in the health industry today. After exploring the General Rooms, Fluoroscopy Rooms, A & E, MRI, CT, Cardiovascular, Ultrasound and Mammography sectors, I have come to realise that radiographers need to be capable of understanding the anatomy and the complexity of the human body as well as knowing how to apply this knowledge when dealing with patients. I was pleased to find out that the work of radiographers is highly appreciated by the radiologists within the department. I understand the importance of their help during procedures such as barium meals, barium enemas, ERCP, epidural steroid injections, and that they enable doctors to carry out their jobs properly. As well as being able to produce high quality images, radiographers need to be able to empathise with patients and have good interpersonal skills to help them deal with them efficiently, whether they are mobile, immobile, young or elderly. I believe I hold those skills within me and that I have the aptitude to become a radiographer with a passion for the profession. I am a very self motivated person with desire to help others. I currently hold a senior position at my school where I am responsible for making sure our prospective students get all the information they want about university. I have also worked as a 'Reading Buddy' for pupils of different abilities lower down the school, helping them to read confidently. Being a volunteer member of the "BulliesOut" online mentoring staff, I have undertaken professional training so that victims of bullying are able to approach me with confidence and trust. As well as studying for my A-levels, I have chosen to undertake the Welsh Baccalaureate course in hope of further enhancing my communication, ICT and presentation skills. Taking part in the Engineering Education Scheme of Wales as the ICT manager and Designer for my team has lead to researching and testing the qualities of ultrasound. This project gave me the opportunity to enhance my team work skills as well as my organisation skills. Our team was nominated for 'Most Innovative Design' and 'Best Solution to the Problem'. I have love and enthusiasm for the Japanese language and culture. I have been fascinated since several years ago and now I'm studying the language by myself through internet resources. This has improved my independent learning skills. In ten years' time, I would like to see myself as a sonographer, working in the NHS. Hopefully after gaining even more experience, I would like to become a consultant radiographer. Universities Applied to:
