Personal Statement:Economics 23TSR Wiki > University > Applying to University > Personal Statement Library > Economics 23 My lack of knowledge of the business world led me to interrogating my local shop keeper as to why the prices of his goods had suddenly increased one morning in September 2008. After a brief explanation on market and price mechanisms, I had unknowingly stumbled upon the fundamentals for macroeconomics. The relevance of economic concepts are immeasurable and apply throughout our daily lives, influencing my decision to study Economics at Degree level. Since the discovery of the field, I am becoming widely read on inspirational economists such as Abram Lincoln Harris and Gary Becker who have left trademarks with the aid of a degree in Economics. As passionate as I am about Economics, passion supplemented by acquired knowledge from a degree will not only enable me become an aspiring economist but a certified economist who earns credit for making a difference to society, like the aforementioned economists have. I strongly believe a degree will provide me with significant preparation for an economics related profession through the acquisition of transferrable skills such as interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication skills as well as time management skills. My enthusiasm and passion for the course has thus been inspired through progressively productive class debates on today’s economic crisis. I particularly enjoy the complex discussions on how the government should allocate resources in order to promote economic welfare as it directly concerns each one of us. Juggling both BTEC National Diploma in Business and AS Economics shows an advanced level of commitment to hard work and has developed my organisation as well as time management skills in the process. Both courses require and improve upon one’s ability to think analytically through sheer hard work and purposeful practice. Studying both courses complement my learning and development of knowledge in the field of economics. Growing up watching shows such as The Apprentice and Dragons Den has massively contributed to my career choice. I was a privileged participant in a team of hard workers who attained a semi-finalist award in the prestigious Enfield Mayor’s Award for Enterprise. This competition taught me team working skills as well as improving upon my organisational skills and confidence. I have also achieved the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award in which I enhanced my team leadership qualities, building upon my will to succeed. I greatly enjoyed my experience and my commitment to engage in challenging experiences has had me working towards fundraising for the World Challenge Educational Expedition to Croatia and Montenegro, due to take place in July 2012. Furthermore, I am relishing the test of participating in the ifs Student Investor Challenge, a share trading game in which thousands of teams from schools nationwide take part. I deem myself to be an objective analytical thinker and I hope to advance my leadership and interpersonal skills that will place me a step ahead of today’s economically challenged environment. I am a student council representative and a school prefect which duties involves bearing the responsibility and authority to see to it that exemplary and commendable examples are set for fellow students in the lower years to follow suit. Knowing that I need to initiate leadership in whatever task I undergo, I make mentoring year 7 students a priority each school morning to help them achieve academic success just as I have. As stated earlier, I would like to pursue an Economics degree with the possibility of studying abroad. I strongly feel this degree will open avenues for me in the future and secure a fruitful career in the intellectually stimulating world of economics. “In our personal ambitions we are individualists. But in our seeking for economic and political progress as a nation, we all go up or else we all go down as one people”.
