Economics and Management Personal StatementDear Sir or Madam, for the last two years of my secondary school education, I had the unique opportunity to elect Economics and Management as one of my two intensive courses. During the course I encountered the theories of Adam Smith, John M. Keynes and their successors. I also learned about markets and their imperfections as well as business administration and accounting. I found these to be fascinating areas to study, and I would love to continue my studies in more depth at university. The biggest challenges of the future will be of economic nature like globalisation and poverty, the allocation of depleting resources, and environmental sustainability. At university I am hoping to gain insight on how to analyse and find practical, fair and creative solutions to these problems. Following the daily press and other economics and business related publications I have developed a special interest in development economics. I read the books of Joseph E. Stiglitz on globalisation, because I feel that it is important that we find a way to give everybody a fair chance to compete in the global markets. This is a fascinating and challenging task for economists that I would find exciting to work on. Other books I have read outside of school included "Monkey Business" by John Rolfe and Peter Troob, "The Undercover Economist" by Tim Harford and other popular economics books. Working with my mother, who owns and runs a toy store, has given me the opportunity to get first hand experience in small business management. This has sparked my interest in the world of larger corporations, especially in the context of global markets and interconnections, as well as corporate strategy. Therefore, I plan to combine the studies of economics and management at university. The secondary school I attended is noted for its rigorous curriculum. Since I skipped grade 8 and spent a year abroad attending secondary school in Canada, I missed parts of the regular curriculum and had to work hard and independently to catch up. From this experience I took away important skills including time management and organisational skills. I was also taught how to work under pressure, to meet deadlines and to take leadership in group projects. Leadership and commitment have also been important in my part time job as a hockey coach. It involved preparation and presentation of drills as well as communication with parents and the children to maintain a high level of motivation. Other spare time activities of mine include making music and playing hockey at competitive level as well as investing in the stock market. Until the end of February, I will be travelling in Australia. I believe that travelling, working and meeting new people are valuable experiences that will teach me maturity, self-sufficiency, and other important social skills. I feel passionately that much needs to be done in order to bring the global community closer together and solve the aforementioned problems. In the future I can see myself working for an international institution, as for example the World Bank, to help achieve this. I would love to study at your University, because I believe I have both the academic skills and personality to excel in the course and career thereafter. I am open and friendly, and I am looking forward to getting involved in many societies and making a positive contribution to your student community. Universities Applied to:
