German and Music Personal StatementBach, Mozart and Schubert: three legendary composers and three reasons why the study of German and music complement each other perfectly. A joint degree in these two subjects seems the natural step to me after my enthusiasm for them has developed during my years of schooling. I began to learn German at the age of twelve and immediately found I had a natural aptitude for it. The more I have learnt, the more I feel that German has opened new doors for me: being able to converse, listen, write or read in a foreign language are to me indispensable skills. Having recently travelled independently in Germany to develop my conversation, I am looking forward to improving my language proficiency even further at university, particularly on my year abroad, as well as discovering more about German culture and society. German literature is an area I am certainly looking forward to exploring, having enjoyed the study of English Literature at AS Level. I have read Bernhard Schlink's "Der Vorleser" as part of my literature module, which I found insightful in its characterisation as well as examining perceptively different experiences of the Holocaust. I have read several English books in translation in order to improve my German and I enjoy reading German magazines such as "Stern" and "Der Spiegel"; as well as adding to my vocabulary, these articles give me a glimpse into German politics and society, an aspect that complements my study of Politics at A level. I find it fascinating to read the German perspective on international events, such as the war in Iraq. Additionally, I have seen several films in German, including "The Lives of Others" and "Goodbye Lenin". These films have strengthened my interest in post-war Germany and the DDR. I find these films very interesting because, despite being modern, they are often shaped by the events of the recent past. Having been born into an extremely musical family, I have been surrounded by music from a young age. As I have grown up, my interest in theory has developed; I am greatly enjoying the academic aspects of my A Level course. I have found studying Bach chorales particularly fascinating, as their superficial simplicity belies the complexity beneath. I believe a thorough understanding of the fundamental aspects of harmony and melody encourages a greater appreciation of music, and I am hoping to take my Grade VIII theory as soon as I have finished Grade VIII violin. Performing has always been a major part of my life. I was a first violin in the Norfolk County Youth Orchestra, which I really enjoyed, and I currently lead the main school orchestra and string orchestra in which I played the solo in the Telemann viola concerto. I have just taken over the running of our sixth form vocal ensemble, which prides itself on its high standards. Leading a choir has involved new responsibilities; not only do I choose and arrange music but I have learnt how to communicate my ideas to the singers. I have found this challenging but immensely satisfying. At university, I am looking forward to getting involved with a range of talented performers so that I can participate in more ambitious concerts and performances. My activities and interests are not just centred on music, however. I am a leader of our school's Amnesty International group, which not only involves writing letters on behalf of Amnesty, but also fundraising and recruiting members. Being a team leader has made me more conscientious and responsible, and working for Amnesty has provided an outlet for my strong sense of justice. My membership of the school's debating club has given me more confidence and the ability to articulate my opinions. My part time job in a bookshop not only allows me to meet new people but also fuels my love of books, whilst operating in a working environment has made me more reliable and mature. Overall, the study of German and Music is a perfect combination and I believe I have the commitment, enthusiasm and desire to excel.
