History Personal Statement

When selecting my courses to study at University I decided that I needed to choose a subject in which I had a genuine interest

Since a young age I have had a desire to explore and deepen my understanding of all aspects of history, in particular the Ancient World and Modern Political History. My interest in the USSR and Eastern Europe was further fuelled by a school exchange trip which led me to spend 2 weeks in Moscow and I now have a strong command of both the Russian and Greek languages. I am keen believer that in understanding human activity in the past, we have an excellent basis for understanding such activity in the present and I have begun to read more deeply and understand more completely what History entails

My enjoyment of reading led me to read 1984 by George Orwell, which I found a fascinating bridge between History and English

I am currently undertaking an Access course in teaching and wish to build upon this by completing my degree and eventually going on to teach in one of my chosen subjects. The allure of teaching is the prospect of some day stimulating the minds of young individuals and becoming an influential figure in their lives. I also believe that teaching is a stimulating and creative process

My current studies mean that I will be well prepared for my time at University and it has given me a solid base to build upon in the coming years. I enjoy the classroom teaching, but also get personal fulfilment from carrying out independent research

I believe my employment history will also benefit me greatly. I am currently working p/t as a weekend supervisor for Bid-Up.TV, an interactive auction channel. My work consists of co-ordinating and leading a team of 30 staff, the recruiting and training of my team and being responsible for the smooth running of the whole department. I have worked in various supervisory/management roles previously and believe the decision to go back into full time education displays an eagerness to learn and further myself and complete my education which was originally wrecked by a personal tragedy

I am a keen sportsman and have represented my borough at football. I am also a keen canoeist and won a bronze medal at the London Youth Games. My love for water sports has also led me to travel to such places as the South of France. My other great love is music and I have played the guitar for a variety of bands

My choice of university reflects my desire to attend an institution that is renowned for its academic excellence in my chosen subject area and will allow me to perform to my potential both academically and socially.
