Law and Social Sciences Personal StatementMy family background means that I have always held an interest in legal and social issues; my mother worked as a social worker which sparked my interest and this was furthered after my parent's divorce. My A level Law course has furthered my interest in these areas and in the second year of the course I am studying criminal law. This is something which fascinates me, especially as I have a huge interest in understanding why people are drawn to commit crimes. I also have a keen interest in politics, and I am currently studying the politics of America which has increased my understanding of the US presidential election; something that effects the entire world. My History A level course has also given me a better understanding of how our country and society has developed, and my study of Nazi Germany has shown me the importance of standing up for our rights and freedom, something I fully believe in. The courses which I have studied have improved my analytical and writing skills to a high standard, and mean that I am a more capable student. At college, I am the current Student Union secretary and vice-president. My current projects are co-ordinating an end of year prom and in light of the current increase in prices of food, trying to lower prices in the college canteen. As well as this, I am also on a NUS sounding board, covering and affecting topics such as the national minimum wage, how students access advice and information about their futures in schools, and the CALL campaign. Also, I sit on the college corporation as the student governor, helping make decisions that potentially could affect all 37,000 students across the college. I love each of the jobs that I do within my college as I'm doing something different and talking to different people every day. When I studied for my GCSEs, I also completed a training course with the Welsh Assembly on Procurement, and I sat on an interview panel to recruit a company which would be providing courses to young people all over Wales about politics. I also took part in the Young Enterprise scheme where I was Managing Director, and was on the school debating team. Over the last summer, I worked in a call centre selling loans. This taught me how to deal with difficult situations within strict legal guidelines; a challenge I relished. I soon learnt that angry customers need fast, sensible solutions which I had to find quickly that would suit both the company and the customer. I also learned to speak to many different types of people and to organise myself properly. I have also worked as a child minder, and regularly work as a babysitter; big responsibilities but I love doing it! Music is another of my passions. I play bassoon and double bass in county orchestras as well as flute for my own enjoyment. Through my tuition in these, I have passed graded examinations in these, all at merit or distinction level. Cooking also interests me, and I love trying out new recipes and experimenting with different flavours and textures. Other hobbies of mine include writing and reading; especially George Orwell, and Harper Lee, the cinema, travelling and foreign languages; I would love to expand upon my German GCSE and possibly take up Spanish too. I am keen to take up a place on the Erasmus programme, especially to either America or Germany. Along with this, I would also like to join the Student Union and contribute to any student publications such as a newspaper or magazine. I believe that my enthusiasm for the subject, combined with my drive to do things to the best of my ability, my willingness to get involved and my passion to solve problems would make me a suitable applicant for this course.
