Business and Management Personal StatementMy interest in studying Business and Management comes from initially discussing with my father about his experiences and working part time in the company he runs. This has led me to become more conscious of organisational behaviour and to believe that excellent communication, innovation, decision making and enthusiasm are all essential for effective business management. During my time in the sixth form I have developed my management skills through a variety of projects with set deadlines. This required me to plan and organise my workload efficiently, as well as being able to identify and resolve problems. Studying Business Studies allowed me to learn key features and strategies necessary to succeed, and then research and question how these are applied to real life circumstances. This has led me to develop skills of analysis and the capacity to work independently, as well as part of a group. My understanding of business activities was greatly enhanced through a field trip to Cyprus, where a number of businesses, including the tourism board and an aluminium manufacturing plant, were visited. These visits put into perspective and utilised the knowledge I had previously acquired in lessons and helped me to develop personal skills by listening attentively and asking in-depth questions. I have developed an academic and mathematical foundation through studying Statistics. This allows me to apply skills of numeracy to situations, through collecting, analysing and interpreting data and then making informed decisions in areas such as finance, marketing and research. For a business to be successful, I feel that it is important that Statistics are understood to assess performance, so that corrective action can be taken if required. Gaining knowledge of ICT enabled me to view the importance of technology in business. This was supported by a field trip to EDF Energy’s southern office, where there were a number of management based activities focusing on how businesses gain the competitive edge. Through analysing several case studies based upon international business, globalisation and climate change, Geography has helped me to understand how businesses function in a global context, shaped by social, economical, political and environmental factors. Living in Singapore for two years helped me to understand and accept other cultures and religions, which helped me to realise the importance of ethics in effective global business management. Academically I have become a strong and motivated person. My dedication to school work has resulted in recent examination success and being invited to join the ‘National Academy For Gifted And Talented Youth’. I have been involved in a number of extra curricular activities including going to the gym, playing the saxophone, badminton and football. I have also attended university lectures on Business Studies and Geography, and was a delegate at the ‘Model United Nations General Assembly’, where I acted as a representative for North Korea and had to speak about challenging world issues to a large audience. This required diplomatic skills and confidence, in having to express a large number of controversial opinions. These activities have all resulted in teamwork skills and leadership qualities, enabling me to cooperate and communicate well with others. Through my experience in a variety of part time employment with Woolworths, Dynalite and Tesco, I have been able to understand diverse business cultures and to develop knowledge in various departments, such as sales and customer service, administration and logistics, computer aided design and human resources. This degree will equip me well for my career in business, and from my experience and ambition, I am confident that I have the required self motivation, ability and commitment to succeed.
