Mathematics Personal Statement

Maths is a subject that I have always taken pleasure from and has been my favourite since primary school. I enjoy solving problems, and take great satisfaction upon reaching the correct answer. Over the last couple of years, I have seen the importance and relevance that mathematical techniques have in everyday life, and I believe that further enhancement of my knowledge in this subject would allow me to be more successful in my career. I believe that I am well equipped to follow this programme, as I am currently studying A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, taking modules in Pure Maths, Statistics, and Mechanics. I consider the course to be suitable as the extra year gives me the opportunity to study the subject with a greater level of specialisation, which is ideal if I wish to pursue a career as a professional Mathematician. The Master of Mathematics choice also allows me to tailor the programme to suit my personal area of interest, which is Pure Mathematics

I have been to two placements that have furthered my desire to have a career based strongly upon mathematics. I have undertaken two weeks work experience during June 2000 at Wenham Major, which is an accountancy firm in Birmingham, and have also worked as a volunteer teaching assistant for nine months, from November 2000, in a Year One class at St. Michael's Junior and Infant School, in **********. This work included helping children with their arithmetic

I take part in a number of extra-curricula activities in school. I am a member of the company, 'Ice', which is a branch of the Young Enterprise. My role as Deputy Finance Director allows me to use my mathematical skills to ensure that the company is a financial success

I also sat the Young Enterprise examination, which I passed with a distinction. I have participated in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme to Bronze level, which involved volunteering in a St. Giles Hospice Shop, and learning to develop my own photographs in the school's dark room, a skill that I still continue to enjoy

Out of school, I am a member of a local youth group, called Focus Venture Scouts. Through this organisation I have experienced many 'outward bound' activities, and have been on a cub camp weekend at the end of June 2001 as a young leader. My responsibilities involved supervising the children, from the ages eight to eleven, and making sure that they had a good weekend. Another of my hobbies is watching sport, especially football. I am a fanatical supporter of Birmingham City Football Club, being a season ticket holder. Other sports that I enjoy are cricket and tennis, which I play for relaxation. As well as this, I like to travel abroad, having visited both France and America three times, taking in the East and West coasts. Through school I have taken part in two German Exchanges to Kaufbeuren in Bavaria, which have allowed me to become more confident, further my knowledge of German culture and enhance my ability to speak and understand the language

During my time in the Sixth Form I have given some service back to the school. I am currently a Form Prefect and have just started mentoring the lower school by giving the pupils extra help with their Maths work. I find this work rewarding, especially when I can see that they are beginning to understand a topic

I would like to pursue a career in Mathematics; perhaps as a professional mathematician or as an accountant, as after carrying out my work experience at an accounting firm, this is another field that I am considering

Overall, I believe that success is a result of working hard, and I will continue to do so until I achieve my ultimate goal, which is a career in Mathematics.
