Personal Statement:Media Production 1

Media Production Personal Statement

Media plays a significant role in everyday modern life. This is why I wish to study media production. I have always been fond of creative writing and developed myself further, by writing a drama monologue for my English Language AS coursework. I improved this script writing skills by being part of a small A level theatre studies group, who devised a script for theatre. This will assist me in writing scripts for the media and gave me experience of team working, which I enjoy. For my theatre studies A level, I will be directing the production, designing the set and assisting with the lighting and sound. I often make small video clips. I included one such clip in my theatre studies AS piece.

I am a keen photographer and have recently attained a level 1 qualification in Digital Photography at night school. The course included photo shop editing and taking high quality pictures.

I have participated in 4 school musicals, acting and assisting with lighting and sound. These technical elements of the theatre fascinate me. I am interested in the different effects and lighting that can be used within the media.

During the summer, I completed 2 weeks work experience with Greater Manchester Police corporate communications & media production department. This unit creates videos for training, school documentaries, Youtube and film footage for the media, in connection with serious crime. I learnt editing and software skills and I created some footage that is now on the GMP intranet and the force annual report. I obtained an insight into YouTube, Facebook, Flickr and twitter feeds. I am interested in these new technologies. Although I haven’t studied media studies at A level, I feel I will easily pick up the camera skills and new technologies involved in the media.

After a tour of the BBC and this placement, I have become more interested in the use of film in media, as well as the researching and analysis involved in media. The tour of the BBC allowed me to look at different types of media including radio also which fascinates me, I especially like the use of sound effects in Radio Drama. These sound effects used at the BBC inspired me to record my own sound effects for my AS Level production of “Two”. Taking Product Design AS level was challenging but the production planning was beneficial. When making my product, I discovered ways to resolve difficult problems. This enabled me to problem solve in other situations and provided production planning opportunities. Product Design encouraged me to analyse my own work and other products in the market, learning how to conduct assessments. I applied for the Arkwright Scholarship, for which I was a runner up, after a rigorous interview and assessment process.

I have part time jobs at Greenhalgh’s Craft Bakery and Bury Grammar Junior School Breakfast Club. Although these jobs do not relate to media, I have learnt skills that will be beneficial in the media industry, such as working independently, team working, communicating at different levels and interacting with difficult customers. I have also learnt about the power of advertising. These skills will be beneficial within media as I will have to work as a team to create a production, and again work with members of the public who may not feel comfortable or confident. I also volunteer at Bury Police station in the property store. I organise Police evidence and write letters to members of the public instructing them to collect their property. This has been an experience for me, speaking to Police Officers, providing them with items needed for court.

I have done many things to contribute to the school including being a member of the school’s Combined Cadet Force and participated in an inspection by the Lord Lieutenant of Manchester. I have represented the school in the Rhys Davies Mock Law Trial, in which I was a court report. This court reporting allowed me to get an insight into the journalism part of media.

I have gained my Grade 7 London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts award. To gain this I have performed 2 musical theatre pieces in front of an examiner, as well as performing a monologue. This has increased my confidence and enabled me to talk and express my ideas, to a large group of people.

Through everything I do in my academic work and leisure time, media is a major part in either advertising, digital media or writing. I have always had a flare and love for media and with the skills I hope to achieve from this course, I wish to go on and work in broadcasting companies, either as an analyst, researcher, operating the camera or editing the footage.
