Media Studies Personal Statement

AV broadcast and production holds an immense passion for me, and I watch television and listen to radio broadcasts with increasing technical interest - it amazes me the effect that radio and music have on peoples' lives

My introduction to radio broadcasting began at Bosworth College, where I presented a daily 'underground' house music show entitled 'Back to Our House' - a nostalgic look at 1980s Chicago-borne house music, and its profound influences. I subsequently took up voluntary positions at Leicestershire's Hospital radio Fox, and children's station 'Takeover Radio', which has recently been awarded a permanent FM license, broadcasting across the East Midlands on 103.2FM. At both stations, I progressed to the role of 'production assistant', wherein I used such software as Cool Edit Pro, Wavelab, and Sound Forge, I assisted in editing various news, sport, and entertainment bulletins for a variety of shows

I am currently involved in two weekly radio shows for Loughborough University student station, LCR. Firstly, a Tuesday late-night dance-orientated show entitled "Housewerk", devised, produced, and presented entirely by myself, attracting such international 'underground' dj names as Jay Tripwire, Eddie Richards, and Mike Grant to the weekly 'Guestmix' feature. The second of the two, 'The Dan & Scott Show', is an adult-comedy show, which I have devised and produced for two American students, and thoroughly enjoy working in a team for the operation of this show

In addition to the radio shows, I also DJ for a twice weekly club night, named 'Stylus' at 'Bocca' in Loughborough University's students' union, promoted and co-organised by myself and two fellow DJ'S. One of the highlights for this year-old night was an exclusive event for the Nordoff-Robbins music-therapy charity fundraiser World DJ Day 2002, receiving a 'name-check' on Pete Tong's Essential Selection on Radio 1. Here, the entire night was filmed by student television station, 'LSU TV', later to be edited and screened throughout the students' union. The special effects generated in a computer environment would hold a tremendous interest for me, and to this end I would like to embark on an interactive media course at University to develop my skills further

This has been such an ambition of mine that my subject choices at GCSE and A-level have been geared towards it. The resultant high grades at GCSE have further reinforced my degree choice. Currently studying A-levels in English Language, Sociology, and Media, I believe English has been invaluable in developing debating and textual analytical abilities, whilst Sociology has provided me with the introduction to research methods, and its application in my most recent media module of 'Independent Study', widening my breadth of knowledge, and allowing me the opportunity to produce my own study on a contemporary topic. An AS-Level in Computing last year also enabled me to deal with complex software as Access, and to a degree, Visual Basic. Both 'AS' Computing and GCSE IT have encouraged my interest in the IT domain, continually exploring with such packages as Dreamweaver, Premiere 6, Flash, Adobe Photoshop, Cubase SX, and Reason on my home computer

I have a part-time job at Marks & Spencer where I have learnt to deal with the public, and consider myself polite, willing to learn and above all, reliable. A two-week work experience placement at IBM, Nottingham in May 2000 was also advantageous, as using such specialist software as Lotus, I communicated effectively over the phone to IBM business affiliates around the world collecting 'logged data'. Most importantly, in this career field of media that I would like to pursue, I relish a challenge.
