Medicine Personal StatementMedicine is a career with a large capacity to explore the diverse areas of science. I want to be able to use knowledge and skills to perform procedures, which can benefit society thereby interacting with the public and offering my part in helping the vulnerable. It is not my dream purely because of the complexity, but the fact that it leads you onto a path that is practical in helping the needy. The feeling of contentment when a person is able to continue their life, after putting their entire trust in you to cure them is gratifying. My desire to become a doctor has also risen from my current subjects and I am keen to learn further. I particularly enjoy chemistry and biology because I am eager to understand the body functions in detail so I can have a different perspective of the body. The practicality of science is what intrigues me, from making antifebrin in chemistry to dissecting a sheep's heart in biology, I want to gain a deeper insight into the anatomy of humans and how our body systems interact with illness and drugs. I became a volunteer at Tameside hospital to get a true feel for a hospital environment. Working with the elderly and staff has shown me how an illness can turn your life upside down and how hospital can become a home. These tough times need a caring and sympathetic approach, which I believe I have. Over the past four months I took part in observing the doctors and nurses daily routines and offered my help by serving drinks and sharing my company with the patients. This allowed me to acquire and develop some of the life-long skills that would support this profession such as communication, hospitality and patience. My work shadowing at Werneth Lodge residential care home improved my ability to sympathise with the residents. Through conversation and playing games I became more aware of how sensitivity is important in approaching any patient and building relations and trust is essential. I participated in a PBL session with students from Manchester University; this activity left me with the drive to succeed. The idea of independent learning is a key factor in this vocation as you are solely responsible for the patient and need the ability to figure out the best treatment, and I even noticed how a trivial piece of information could have hidden clues into the patient's condition. In addition I took advantage of the college enrichment programme and completed a first aid course as well as attending aim higher sessions for medicine and chemistry. I live a sociably balanced life in which I enjoy cooking travelling and I recently started driving. Also engaging in sports such as badminton and swimming with friends is a pastime. My love of art has lead to my artistic and creative nature as well as developing an interest in reading the general health news on the student BMJ and the Paediatrics and child's health website to enhance my awareness of the current issues. This competitive course only inspires me more to face the challenging work, as I am passionate, self-motivated and aware of what I want to achieve so I hope I can become one of the future medics.
