Medicine Personal StatementMedicine is arguably the most rewarding and fulfilling field of work. A career in medicine involves continuous studying, learning and professional development. Given the enormity of pathology to diagnose and treat, there is significant intellectual challenge. Medicine is also an exceptionally broad subject with many specialties to be explored. The opportunity to use scientific knowledge to work against illness, integrated with the practical aspects of being a doctor gives medicine a stimulating and challenging dimension that attracts me to the profession. I have chosen to pursue medicine as I feel there is no other career pathway that I would take more satisfaction and enjoyment from. I am eager to dedicate my working life to being the best doctor I can, and making a difference in people's lives. My work experience in various hospital departments has given me a taste of the realities of medicine. During my time on the wards, I observed the different roles of members of the multi-disciplinary team of the NHS and how this team functions. I drew great enjoyment from spending time on the wards, especially talking with the patients and hospital staff. It was an ideal situation to test and further enhance my communication skills. Spending time in a medical environment allowed me to grow as a potential medical student and learn new and interesting things about practicing medicine, such as the way in which drugs act on the body, the impact of widespread antibiotic use and infection control. Ward rounds with the team of doctors were the most exciting aspect of the experience. The doctors explained the nature of the illness and how this was affecting the patient and then went on to describe how the treatment was progressing. I have been volunteering at a local youth club over the last few months for several hours every week. Working with children has been enjoyable, rewarding and often amusing. Being responsible for a group of young people has enhanced my leadership skills and strengthened my confidence by placing me in unfamiliar situations that required me to exercise my own judgement, such as deciding on an appropriate way to manage difficult situations where a child had been badly behaved or distressed. I enjoy several sports and am a member of local football and cricket teams. My intention is to continue at least one of these activities at university as I feel it is important to maintain a healthy work-play balance due to the demanding nature of the course. These particular hobbies have also taught me the value of teamwork and the discipline of being a team member, which I consider to be key skills in the field of medicine. I do, however, also enjoy the solitude of fishing, which gives me time with my own thoughts and helps reduce stress. It has also improved my patience, which will most likely be useful in the future when dealing with patients. Additionally, I regularly play snooker and I feel this will be valuable should my application be successful. Playing snooker requires concentration over long periods of time, and I feel this is a useful attribute for a doctor to possess. Working long hours with a large caseload must require a significant amount concentration. I am aware from speaking with doctors, both junior and senior, that being a doctor is a very demanding and time-consuming profession. However my desire to become a doctor has only been cemented by my work experience and volunteer work. I am a determined and highly motivated individual with a real zest for science. Combining this with the skills I have developed during my time exposed to medicine and volunteering demonstrates my potential to work and thrive in medicine.
