Medicine Personal Statement

From a young age I have been genuinely fascinated by the intriguing world of Science. This passion has fuelled my love for medicine, particularly as I have always been amazed by the complex and intricate workings of the human body. The fact that medicine is an extremely challenging, demanding and rewarding profession leaves me with no doubt about wanting to become a doctor. My A-level studies have reinforced my decision to pursue this career path and allowed me to develop essential skills for this degree. Chemistry has enhanced my analytical and problem solving skills. My accuracy, attention to detail and natural ability to solve problems has been developed through studying Physics and Maths. Reliable observational skills and experimental technique has been developed through during practical work in Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Exiting visits to the Body worlds exhibition and conferences organised by med-link confirmed my desire to pursue a medical degree

Through work experience at a nursing home, hospital and GP's surgery I have been able to gain vital experience and a valuable insight into medicine and the complex, challenging and intricate nature of the work involved. Voluntary work at a homeopathic doctor's surgery and Chinese herbalist have provided me with an alternative perspective to the world of medicine. Various work placements have enabled me to learn more about complex human emotions and begin to empathise with patients. I am aware that medicine requires a great commitment on an educational, physical and emotional level and am prepared to make that commitment. Through these work placements, I have dealt with sensitive patient information and developed an understanding of patient-doctor confidentiality. Work at a pharmacy gave me the opportunity to find out the effects of some drugs and develop my fascination for, and understanding and knowledge of drug action

Within my school I am a prefect and therefore have the responsibility of being a role model to younger students in the school. I have conducted many charity events, raising GBP1000; this has enabled me to become a member of the organising committee of Amal trust, a charity for disadvantaged young people, which organises events such as sports competitions and reaches out to youths in juvenile prisons. I am also an active member of Youth Action, a group of dynamic teachers and students who take the time to talk to and listen younger students' problems. Being brought up within a multicultural society and visiting countries in the far east have helped develop my knowledge of different cultures and traditions. I have also volunteered at my school's autistic unit; this experience has made me more understanding and patient. In addition I have taken part in several debates of controversial issues, which have taught me to listen to others, express myself articulately and view key issues from a wider perspective. I have also gained the ability to view a topic from a wider perspective. In addition I have also participated in debating events including Pupil Parliament and 'Blair on Trial'. My interest in computer systems and model making has improved my manual dexterity, as I am able to use specialised tools with a great deal of precision. I enjoy being challenged and have participated in the Physics Olympiad, which involved solving physics problems to take part in a national competition

My ability to work well in a team has mainly been developed through my participation in cricket, where I have learnt the true meaning of good sportsmanship. I also enjoy paint-balling as it requires the development of strategies whilst in the battle field. Sport has given me the opportunity to become more independent and self disciplined whilst maintaining my physical and mental strength. I am keen to develop my personal skills further by being an active member of societies within the university

My varied and extensive range of work experiences, ability to work under pressure, time management and dedication to medicine will make me a successful student. This, coupled with my ability, and strength of character make me worthy of further consideration for my chosen degree course. I very much look forward to the new challenges a medical degree will bring.
