Nursing Personal StatementSpending 6 months in hospital with my younger brother while he was going though chemotherapy treatment for cancer established my desire to work within the health care sector. This desire was further enhanced as I watched how the doctors and nurses provided for his smallest of needs and this gradually became my long-term career goal. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to become a part of the NHS and the thought of doing so through nursing has developed over the recent years. To have the ability to make a difference to a person's life strikes me as rewarding and I feel nursing can help me obtain this ability, while still suiting my personality. I thoroughly enjoy caring for and improving the health of people, specifically children, while keeping in mind the individual needs they may have. I am very interested in the way in which children think and behave and would very much enjoy a career where I would constantly be dealing with them. I am aware that child nursing can be very demanding but believe that I can reach my true potential and can work to the best of ability if I maintain my determination and motivation. Studying A levels in Double Award Health & Social Care and Psychology have given me an insight into the ways in which humans interact and communicate with others, along with an in-depth view of the physical, intellectual, emotional and social needs that all individuals have. I enjoyed, in Health & Social Care, learning about the different environments of care settings as well as methods that can be used to improve a child's development. Psychology has given me an insight into the connections that can be made with a person's situation and the psychological needs they may have. As part of work experience, I really enjoyed spending two weeks at a local nursery where I watched the young children develop and improve their skills day after day. My role was to help and support children in various activities and to intervene when necessary. I also had to organise the activities for the children before they arrived at the nursery and the experience allowed me to show my reliability and determination and my time-management skills. I gained a valuable understanding of the way in which children need to be spoken to and how to deal with problematic situations involving children. I am currently part of the Reading Buddies Mentoring Scheme at my sixth form which aims to provide Year 7 pupils with support in their reading skills. I have taken part in a First Aid Basic Life Support Course as well as charity events such as the George Thomas Hospice Walk. I have also done voluntary work at a primary school during the end of term when they had a busy schedule to follow. I supported the children in their activities and this helped to build my communication skills with them. I also helped with other tasks such as organising activities, tidying up and monitoring the children while they were playing in the playground. I gained the ability to boost the confidence levels and the self-esteem of the children which I found very rewarding. To improve my interpersonal skills, I have arranged to do some voluntary work in a hospital where I will be interacting with people with medical needs and hope this will be beneficial to me. In my spare time I enjoy reading books of various genres as well as socialising with others. I find badminton and baseball both fun and relaxing and try my best to engage in such activities when I can. I try my best to keep a balance between my academic and social life so I don't neglect or disregard one or the other in any possible way. I am very passionate about the coming years and I feel that pursuing a career in nursing would allow me to truly attain the skills and abilities that are needed, to care and provide support for children who need it. I am a determined and hard-working student and studying such a satisfying career like child nursing at your university would be a privilege for me.
