Pharmacy Personal Statement

I have chosen to study Pharmacy as I would like to obtain a degree in a subject that I find interesting, but which will also lead to a specific professional qualification. I have always enjoyed and excelled in the Sciences and Maths, and believe a degree in Pharmacy will make excellent use of both my academic skills and my personal qualities

Although Pharmacy is a specific professional qualification, what particularly attracts me is the fact that there are still various areas in which one can specialise and a choice of environments in which one can work, following registration. I am attracted to the increasing scope and responsibilities of the Pharmacist for advising clients and recommending 'over the counter' medications and also look forward to studying the laws and ethical issues associated with Pharmacy

I have recently spent a short period of time in the Pharmacy Department of a local hospital gaining some experience and confirming my choice. Whilst at the hospital I shadowed the pharmacist on his daily ward visit, helped the Pharmacy Technician prepare prescriptions for discharged patients, learned about the importance of the 'controlled drugs register' and also gained basic knowledge about certain drugs. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. In the near future I am due to spend time at a Chemist, gaining additional experience of the work of a community pharmacist

For the past year I have also had a Saturday job in the music department of a large bookshop. This experience has proved very worthwhile as I have become more confident in dealing with people and it has also improved my time management skills. It has also helped develop my communication skills. I enjoy dealing with people and relate well to all age groups

Away from my academic studies I have always had a varied and active social life. Membership of the scout movement from the age of 5 to 16 has provided me with many opportunities to develop my teamwork and leadership skills as well as helping develop personal independence. I have had numerous enjoyable experiences with the Scouts including many that have required me to deal with problems under pressure and have tested my resourcefulness as leader of a team. I have taken part in many camps, expeditions and competitions and travelled all over the country doing so

My main area of interest is in sport, and in particular American Football. Since 1998 I have played for the Lancashire Wolverine Youth American Football Club and now captain the side as well as acting as Treasurer for the club. This position requires me to keep accurate and up-to-date records of funds and also to display a certain amount of diplomacy when collecting subs! In the near future I hope to gain a coaching qualification which enables me to teach the sport to youngsters

On a national level I have been a regular member of the Great Britain squad, and have played against teams from America and all over Europe

This year I competed for the GB Lions in the European Junior Championships 2000 held in Berlin

Whilst at school I held a number of positions of responsibility including Form Captain and Y7 Mentor. I was also an active member of the Year Council. I believe I have much to offer academically and socially to the university
