Physics with Astrophysics Personal StatementOn the 4th February 2003, former president, George W. Bush said that "the cause of exploration and discovery is not an option we choose; it is a desire written in the human heart." It is this desire, to know and learn more, that has led me to the field of Astrophysics. With every new discovery there is always a genuine sense of great excitement and awe which fills me. There is certainly an element of incompleteness in Astrophysics. However, it is this added element of mystery that drives me to discover and to try to understand the enigmatic secrets, of the Universe; both observational and theoretical. Astrophysics is a continually evolving field, with many interlinked concepts. To advance my understanding and knowledge, I frequently listen to the audio podcast, Astronomy Cast. I am primarily interested in stellar evolution, as functions of different variables, such as mass and metallicity. My fascination also extends to variable stars, such as RR Lyrae and Cataclysmic Variables. The podcast also touched on theoretical aspects, such as the Inflationary Epoch, which cannot be directly observed due to its occurrence before the Cosmic Microwave Background. This has then allowed me to question and analyse other concepts, as observational and mathematical evidence are fundamental. I study Mathematics and Further Mathematics, as being mathematically literate is essential in Physics. Simply describing a concept is inadequate and all concepts and theories must be tested mathematically, to see if they satisfy current equations and if not, whether alternate equations make sense. The subsequent step is to test them observationally and experimentally. Studying Physics has allowed me to statistically analyse data and associate the data, to what we observe and what is calculated. This is essential in a field where observation and theory is united, due to the extreme physics, in our Universe. Studying Music Technology has assisted me in being more computer literate. We were presented with software, which we had never used, and were expected to complete 3 pieces of coursework. It has given me invaluable experience in working with computers, which would be very beneficial in our technologically advancing world. These 3 pieces of coursework were also timed, so it has developed my skills in keeping to deadlines and working independently. As a pianist, I am a part of the college orchestra. We performed at the Bridgewater Hall, for the A-Level Presentation Evening, which required weeks of practise and dedication. Also, being the only pianist, the orchestra relied on me to learn my music and attend all practise sessions. Throughout the year I remained positive and showed I was a reliable and determined individual. I have also had the responsibility of representing the Physics Department, on open evenings, where I talked to potential students and was able to articulate my passion for Physics. For 12 years I was committed to attending Vietnamese School, which occurred every Saturday. During my time there, I learnt about the traditions and cultures of Vietnam. We also planned festivals, for the Vietnamese community, where I performed in theatrical and musical productions. I played the clarinet for 8 years, which developed my independency and flexibility, as I needed the determination to learn different musical pieces, which I didn't necessarily want to learn. I also started the piano 3 years ago, attending lessons, out of school, where I believe I have developed rapidly, as a musician. This allowed me to expand my musical repertoire. It was then when I felt that joining an orchestra would be the best step for me to advance and is subsequently why I joined the college orchestra. In order that I can constantly improve I must never become complacent. Astrophysics is a field which demands a curious nature and I believe I have the capacity to succeed in the degree and also develop myself, both academically and emotionally. Universities Applied to:
