Physiotherapy Personal Statement

I have been interested in health studies since my childhood.

Physiotherapy interests me because it is an active profession, which offers diversity in its application.

All through school I have enjoyed learning about people. All three subjects I am currently studying look at different aspects of human functions or behaviour.

When I was 15 years old I did a week of work experience shadowing a physiotherapist at a school for disabled children aged between 4 and 18 years, where I was involved with the children and their exercises.

I was also able to observe interactions with occupational therapists, music therapists and other health professionals.

Recently I have had more work experience at the Nottingham Nuffield Hospital, where I observed clinical assessments in the outpatients department and the role of the physiotherapist on the ward.

I have a future placement at an NHS outpatient's physiotherapy clinic where I will be involved in group exercise classes.

During the past year at school I have been involved in a mentoring scheme, helping children who are experiencing problems either academically or socially.

Over the past 4 years I have completed my Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award and have more recently achieved my Gold. As part of my Gold Award I had to spend a week doing a residential project. I chose to spend a week on a camp for disabled teenagers, run by a paediatric physiotherapist, where I was a buddy to an 18-year-old girl with profound Cerebral Palsy, and had to care for all her needs during the week.

I have also completed my Girl Guiding Leadership qualification at a Brownie Pack, which I help at every week. This now enables me to be in charge of the pack or teach the girls in small groups.

I have a part time job as a lifeguard. This job has many responsibilities, not only do I have to be alert at all times, but also share a responsibility for the safety of pool equipment and public areas. I am currently working towards my assistant swimming teachers qualification, and in the future I am hoping to progress on to achieving the full swimming teachers certificate. I have been an active member of a competitive swimming club for the past 13 years, and have been captain of this for the past 2 years. I spend one night a week teaching the younger children in the club.

General Comments:

Paragraphs are very short (1 sentence in a lot of cases) and this makes it hard to read, and it doesn't flow as well as it could. --Kirsty-17988 18:44, 23 August 2007 (BST)
