PPE Personal Statement

Following the news from an early age has shown me that the majority of decisions made in a country are determined by Politics. It is when I realised that these decisions are constructed from economics objectives that I became fascinated by the two disciplines and how they relate to one another. Through publications such as “The Economist” and “Politics Review” as well as the appropriate sections of the daily newspapers, I soon became immersed in the world of economics and politics. My attention was sparked during the Iraq conflict as I read details about the Middle East, its relationship with oil and its political and economic implications on a national and international level.

This led me to take Economics as a Higher where, through the use of economic models, statistical data and analysis, I have acquired the tools necessary to tackle complex economic problems. To compliment this, Higher Modern Studies has helped me gain a greater appreciation of the way in which governments work. With my special interest in government decisions and how they are fashioned, I was able to lean more by studying the reaction to the terrorist attacks of 2001 by individual nations.

This year, I am looking at building on my previous knowledge of Economics and Politics at Advanced Higher whilst also gaining an insight into Philosophy. This will undoubtedly improve my way of thinking, debating and constructing well-built arguments. My success of achieving dux in Modern Studies last year has given me the opportunity to enrol in a politics module at Dundee University. This University level module looks to add to my knowledge of Government Politics and, by being the only person in my school to have been selected to take advantage of this opportunity, I feel this will give me more of an insight into what Politics entails at University level

When not studying, I am absorbed in leisure activities. My role as captain of one of the school Rugby teams has improved my communication skills as well as organisation within a team network. My interpersonal skills and teamwork capabilities have also developed through my three years as a Cadet where I have attained the rank of Corporal and now instruct younger cadets on a regular basis. This has made me realise the value of discipline and strict time management. Through my experiences of teaching children Bengali at weekends and by being a Peer Support member at my school, I have developed the patience and fortitude to be a supportive mentor. This is furthered by my position as a school Prefect.

This summer I undertook work experience with a local MP where I was able to fully interact with local politicians, attend meetings and contribute my own viewpoints in policy meetings. I learned a significant amount about the local and national issues currently being debated and how these would impact on the short and long term futures of the Scottish and British public. From an economic point of view I also had the chance to see how a larger company operated when I visited a PriceWaterhouseCooper HQ, where I learned the importance of working in unison and listening to instruction, as well as expecting others to do the same. Currently, my role as managing director of a Young Enterprise company has given me experience of working within a group in a business situation to make as much money for charity as possible. My idea to raise the revenue through advertising from companies most associated with my school has taught me the significance of networking locally. I have also gained the experience of meeting deadlines and motivating colleagues.

I believe my track record shows that I can cope with large amounts of academic work and I believe that my determination and strength of mind will help me overcome all the challenges that university may throw at me. I hope to take this resolve and dedications into whatever career I undertake and use it to achieve success in the future.
