Product Design/Engineering Personal Statement

Product design is a subject which requires a vast amount of creativity and ingenuity which is apparent in my work at GCSE and A Level as both were unusual and unique products. Ever since I was a child my passion had always been taking objects or machines apart and seeing how they work. Anytime a printer or video recorder broke in my house I was the first one there to disassemble it. This interest has grown since I studied resistant materials at secondary school which has led to me wanting to become involved in this field.

This passion of mine encourages me to surpass any coursework requirements which have lead to me undertaking personal projects such as creating my own PC, showing my outside commitment to the field. Using new and modern software for designing such as Google Sketch Up and pro engineer shows how quickly I can grasp new technology and become efficient in using them.

The ability to empathise with others is one of my strong points whether it be helping a friend with a problem or fundraising for a charity. One example may have been my sponsored fast for World Vision raising a sum of £50 at the age of 15 which may show my ability to take on tasks and succeed in them at that young age. The Interact charity group has allowed me to continue this hobby at sixth form by reaching out to a variety of communities including the elderly which was fulfilled by helping gardening at a local old people’s home. Help has come on my behalf through volunteer work at the British Heart foundation Ilford.

Team work is an important skill in the design field as many famous products and designs are created by more than one individual for example the Seymour Powell design company and the Lynx Click bottle which focuses mainly on aesthetics rather than function. By becoming operations manager in the Young Enterprise programme at Sixth Form my ability to work in a team has shone as I successfully managed stock control. Furthermore by completing a JLS award my leadership skills have improved as I learnt how to control a large group of people whilst at all times remaining calm.

Apart from education, sport has also influenced my life. Cricket is the national sport of India, my home country, which has caused the sport to play a major role in my life. I play cricket for then London Underground League accompanying my father. This has a great challenge as my team mates and opponents are three times my age as well as having high levels of experience in the game. I overcame this challenge in my third game by taking 2 wickets and bowling a maiden over. This shows my capability to mix with people older than me which I believe will assist me in the future as colleagues and employers may be older than me.

In spite of my interest for the subject I wish to enhance my subject knowledge and meet new people who have similar personalities to mine in relation with the subject. Design is all around me and I want to be the person who makes others feel what I feel. I hope to be down in history with the Philippe Starck’s and William Morriss’ of the world.
