Psychology Personal Statement

I want to study for a degree in Psychology; it is a subject which I find both intriguing and challenging

Eventually I wish to have a career that is related to Psychology whether it is in a management role, clinical psychologist or forensic psychology.

I am currently studying two humanities subjects, Sociology and Psychology. Studying humans and how the mind works is fascinating, as the topics are related to everyday life.

I also do voluntary work in catechism classes; it involves working with children and assisting the lesson teacher. I enjoy this as I am helping people, and it has benefited me as I've learnt to deal with children and express myself in an authoritative role.

Whilst at school I was a prefect, which helped me gain organizational skills and punctuality. During my school life I made many different friends from different cultures, this gave me a good understanding on different ways of life and religions. I have previously done work experience at a solicitors firm. Here I learnt about time management, and how to behave in a professional work environment. At present I'm a team leader at a market research company, this has helped me gain leadership and teamwork skills.

I enjoy singing and I play the violin. I was part of the orchestra and choir throughout school.

Since starting my A Levels I feel I am now ready academically and emotionally to take on university studies. I am very committed and motivated to start studying Psychology. Psychologists' explanations for behavior and development have challenged my way of thinking; this has motivated me to decide to pursue this subject at degree level.

This PS is incredibly short - you have 4000 characters - use them! One sentence does not equal a paragraph either. The introduction is very poor - it is not 'attention-grabbing' and doesn't say what interests the candidate. Contractions such as 'I've' should be avoided - this is a formal document!

There is no real information on psychology - what the applicant has studied before and what they find interesting. Extra reading/experience is also a must to set you apart from other candidates.

'Psychology' is also improperly capitalised - it should only be a capital 'p' when saying 'BSc/BA Psychology/ A Level Psychology'

Parts of this statement need rephrasing - starting of with 'i want' is a bad idea! --Kirsty-17988 19:31, 23 August 2007 (BST)

I want to study for a degree in psychology; it is a subject which I find both intriguing and challenging full stop? And as mentioned above, a very poor introduction

Eventually I wish to have a career that is related to psychology whether it is in a management role, clinical psychologist or forensic psychology. these are very varied choices! Best to mention one (or two closely related ones) and say why. Career aspirations are not essential in a PS though

I am currently studying two humanities subjects, Sociology and Psychology. careful! A lot of people would consider psychology as a science. Mention how they link though Studying humans and how the mind works is fascinating, overused word in PSs! as the topics are related to everyday life. this needs to be greatly expanded on - how? What does the applicant find interesting?

I also do voluntary work in catechism classes; it involves working with children and assisting the lesson teacher. link to psychology? E.g. memory/learning? I enjoy this as I am helping people, and it has benefited me as I have learnt to deal with children and express myself in an authoritative role.

Whilst at school I was a prefect, which helped me gain organisational skills British spelling! and punctuality. During my school life I made many different friends from different cultures, this gave me a good understanding on different ways of life and religions. this sentence doesn't link together, the 'this' should be 'which' I have previously done work experience at a solicitors firm. Here I learnt about time management, and how to behave in a professional work environment. how do these skills/qualities relate to a psychology degree? If they don't, I would leave them out At present I am a team leader at a market research company, this has helped me gain leadership and teamwork skills. how?

I enjoy singing and I play the violin. I was part of the orchestra and choir throughout school. it's good that the non-related extra-curricular activities is very short, but it can't be in a paragraph on its own like this

Since starting my A Levels I feel I am now ready academically and emotionally very cliched... to take on university studies. I am very committed and motivated to start studying psychology. this really isn't obvious from the rest of the statement... Psychologists' explanations for behavior and development have challenged my way of thinking; this has motivated me to decide to pursue this subject at degree level. this last sentence is good, but would be better suited to an introduction and then expanded on. The conclusion should sum up why the candidate wants to study psychology and why they are a good candidate
