Sociology Personal Statement

I am currently studying Sociology and Theatre Studies at A2 Level, having last year achieved A and B grades, respectively. At AS Level I am studying Politics and Psychology. Whilst I enjoy all of these subjects, I have developed a particular passion and flare for Sociology and have decided to take my study of that subject to degree level. I prefer people-orientated subjects, and enjoy its theoretical nature, which provides space for evaluation and reflection. The way Sociology is rooted in current affairs and debating makes the subject enjoyable for me.

Taking my study of Sociology to degree level is an exciting prospect for me because it means I will be able to not only develop my knowledge of both the classical and modern sociological theories further, but also develop my sociological imagination. I feel that as well as extending my academic skills; my study of sociology will encourage me to further explore my beliefs about people and society. Topics within Sociology which I especially enjoy studying are gender and sexuality, as I find it interesting to examine how such profound aspects of an individuals identity could have been shaped by society.

I currently have a subscription to the Sociological Review, and have done much background reading whilst studying, including Sociological Imagination by C. Wright Mills, and Marx: A Clear Guide by Edward Reiss. I enjoyed reading these texts and was able to extend my knowledge of Sociology beyond the AS syllabus. Reading about Marxism was fascinating for me because I have a particular interest in the theory.

I hope to later obtain a PGCE, with a view to teaching the subject. I have discovered that working with people is a rewarding experience and sociology will enhance my understanding of educational institutions and hopefully help me to be a better teacher.

Outside of school, I am passionate about many things. I enjoy reading from all kinds of genres. I am also an avid theatregoer. My favourite playwright is Bertolt Brecht, a Marxist. As a Sociology student, I find this plays to be very interesting as they comment on many of the things I have learnt in lessons, and have actually helped to develop my understanding of Marxist theory. I also enjoy musical theatre, with my favourite in the genre being Les Miserables.

I have had several experiences in the workplace. I first started working for a stationary shop when I was fifteen, and stayed with that employer for eighteen months. I left this job to allow me to experience a different type of work. I then began working as a waiter for Pizza Hut, a job that I enjoy due to the busy nature and emphasis on working as part of a team, and the opportunity to work in a public facing environment.

My volunteering experiences include working for a local charity shop, Revival. I began work at Revival after visiting The Living Room, the drugs-rehabilitation charity that they support, during Health and Social Care coursework. I found the charity to be so important and inspirational that I decided to help out. Once again I enjoyed the people-orientated nature of the work I did there.

I have participated in many extra-curricular activities, including reading to the blind, which was initiated by one of our caretakers, in which a group of students record articles from a local newspaper, and the tape is copied and sent to local blind people. I have also participated in school shows, and in recent years have acted as a Guide to prospective parents on open evenings. From these experiences I have gained confidence and experience in working with people from many backgrounds.

I believe that I will contribute heavily to any university I attend. I am interested not only in studying , but the number of societies universities offer. I also look forward to the independence of living away from home and choosing modules that particularly interest me later in my degree. I hope that university will teach me not only about sociology, but about life.
