Personal Statement - Teaching 5

Teaching Personal Statement 5

Since starting secondary school I have been fascinated with design and the speed with which Technology has been advancing. I have a strong ambition to study in this field and pass on acquired knowledge to young people through Teaching.

I aim to meet the challenge of a third level education, using and building on study skills that have helped me to achieve good results in my GCSE's and AS subjects. I look forward to broadening my knowledge of Technology and Design and gain the valuable skills for the teaching profession

Through participation in a school based Civic Link scheme I was able to improve my confidence in working with students from different backgrounds than my own. This project involved residential exchanges to the Republic Of Ireland, where my fellow students and I discussed topical issues such as cultural and social problems within our own communities. Following the project I gave feedback to students at my own school and gave an oral presentation on drug abuse awareness using the information I received from the project

As a prefect I have been delegated with a number of responsibilities towards other students in my school, including supervision at key times of the school day. In addition to this role I have been involved in a mentor programme aimed at supporting first year students. This has been particularly valuable, introducing me to the difficulties in helping to teach others

I have achieved many awards during my secondary level education, including full attendance and positive behaviour awards. The one I am most proud of is that of Top Achiever at GCSE level

Recently I undertook a work experience opportunity within my school Design & Technology department. This enabled me to receive an insight into teaching and the skills required. During this time I also enjoyed being able to assist other students with completing their design projects

A scheme that I thoroughly enjoyed participating in was offering younger pupils in my school classroom support. I received much enjoyment from helping these students with their work and found this experience very worthwhile

By involvement in my local cross community youth group I have been able to meet others, improve my social and interpersonal skills immensely and learn to tolerate individual differences in preparation for life outside of school. This has also helped me to appreciate that not everyone comes from the same community or has the same experiences in life

I am applying for technology and design based degrees, as it is a subject that I thoroughly enjoy and would like to use as a basis for a career in teaching. I believe that my work experience within my school and involvement in the mentoring programme have given me some insight into making the right choices towards a career which I will enjoy. I am confident that my ability to plan effectively and work on my own initiative will enable me to achieve results at this level of study and meet the challenges that university life is meant to provide.
