Why Study Government and Politics?

If you're interested in how the country is run then AS politics is for you. If you're interested in Politics globally and its relations with the UK then A2 is for you.

Course Structure

Edexcel Government and Politics AS


Unit 1: People And Politics Time: 1 hour 20 mins Format: 2 questions Question structure is a) 5 points, b) 10 points, c) 25 points.

Topics are: Democracy and political participation, political parties, pressure groups and elections. Answer two questions, one on each of these.


Unit 2: Governing The UK Time:1 hour 20 mins Format: 2 questions Question structure is a choice of 2 questions worth a) 5 points, b) 10 points, c) 25 points, then followed by a choice of 2 questions, each worth 40 marks.

Topics: The Constitution, The Judiciary, The Core-Executive and Parliament. Answer two questions. All 4 topics appear in the paper, but you will not be able to know which part of the paper a topic turns up in. Do not revise only 2 thinking you'll be fine, as both the topics you revise may turn up in the first half, leaving the 40 mark question empty.

Unit 3: Key Themes In Political Analysis Time: 1 hour 30 mins Format: 3 15-mark questions from 5 choices and 1 45-mark question from 3 choices The question structure is as follows: 3 15-mark questions from 5 choices:

  • Topic A
  • Topic B
  • Topic C
  • Topic D
  • Topic D

One 45-mark question from 3 choices:

  • Topic A
  • Topic B
  • Topic C
