Queen's University, Belfast is a large university in Northern Ireland. It has a very good reputation in a number of subjects, including more traditional vocational subjects like medicine, pharmacy and architecture. It also has affiliated teaching colleges Stranmillis and St. Mary's. With such a large student population the uni has a lot going on too, so it's great place for both your academic life and your social life. FacilitiesLibrariesThere are five University Libraries. The Library at Queen’s consists of a number of separate buildings. Together these libraries are equipped with over 2000 study spaces and house significant numbers of PCs. Resources: The Library provides access to a wide range of:
Main Library - Located to the side of the Lanyon Building. It houses the University's core collections of books and periodicals in the humanities, social sciences, and law and official publications. There are also DVD players and a collection of musical scores on the ground floor. The old part is connected to the 11-floor Library Tower via a walkway, and there are numerous computer terminals around, connected to QCat (Queen's Library Catalogue) network. The top floor houses Philosophy, Religion, Archaeology and General History collections, and provides a fantastic view of Belfast from the study-areas. It is spread over 3 floors and houses the short term loan collection, a selection of journal extracts, study areas and computer labs. The Heaney is usually very busy so it's advisable to get in early if you really need something from there. The Seamus Heaney Library is open 24 hours a day in the weeks before and during examinations. The Science Library is a short distance from the Main Site between the Malone & Stranmillis Roads close to the Ashby building. It mainly caters for staff and students in Science and Engineering faculities. There is a new Medical Library on the Royal Victoria Hospital site with supplementary facilities at the Belfast City Hospital.
IT and ComputingSportsWelfareHealthcareShopsBelfast has recently ebcome quite the hub for shopping activity. Now that the new 'Victoria Square' has opened the centre of Belfast has been transformed. It holds the everyday names such as H&M, River Island and a new Flasgship TopShop aswell as I think irelands very first house of Fraser department store. It's sure to cater for everybodys shopping needs. RestaurantsBy virtue of the fact that Northern Ireland is cheaper than most of the mainland, you're going to find loads of great deals here - Botanic avenue has a fairly decent range of places....several chip/kebab/pizza places, The Other Place, a great little restaurant that does 99p ulster fries monday-friday....Harry Ramsden, Subway, Oddles of Noodles (new) and Maggie Mays which you will, at some point, go to. No two ways about it. Big portions, very reasonable prices. Stranmillis direction yields a few more chippies, cafes and a few nice restaurants, with prices that aren't too outrageous. Malone Road, of course, has the Bot, The streat (healthy fast food, pparently) and some more delights. Go far and wide with your cullinary searches - there are lots of gems to find in greater Belfast. BanksMain banks include: Ulster Bank, Nortehrn Bank, Bank of Ireland, First Trust, Abbey National, HSBC, and Halifax TransportMetro services run throughout belfast to the outskirts of the city from about 6am -11pm Wanting to go out of belfast?
