From The Student Room

TSR Wiki > University > Choosing a University > University Guides > Queen's University of Belfast

Queen's University, Belfast is a large university in Northern Ireland. It has a very good reputation in a number of subjects, including more traditional vocational subjects like medicine, pharmacy and architecture. It also has affiliated teaching colleges Stranmillis and St. Mary's.

With such a large student population the uni has a lot going on too, so it's great place for both your academic life and your social life.

Facilities

Libraries

There are five University Libraries.

The Library at Queen’s consists of a number of separate buildings. Together these libraries are equipped with over 2000 study spaces and house significant numbers of PCs.

Resources:

The Library provides access to a wide range of:

  • books and journals in support of each subject area
  • short-loan collections which provide extra copies of books and journals, identified on student reading lists
  • electronic resources i.e. electronic journals, books, bibliographic databases and full text services

Main Library - Located to the side of the Lanyon Building. It houses the University's core collections of books and periodicals in the humanities, social sciences, and law and official publications. There are also DVD players and a collection of musical scores on the ground floor. The old part is connected to the 11-floor Library Tower via a walkway, and there are numerous computer terminals around, connected to QCat (Queen's Library Catalogue) network. The top floor houses Philosophy, Religion, Archaeology and General History collections, and provides a fantastic view of Belfast from the study-areas.

Term-time opening hours:

8.30 am - 10.00 pm Monday - Thursday 8.30 am - 8.30 pm Friday 9.00 am - 12.30 pm Saturday

The "Seamus Heaney Library" is also located off of the main Quad beside the Admin building and is the newest of the Queens Libraries, seating 500 users. It is spread over 3 floors and houses the short term loan collection, a selection of journal extracts, study areas and computer labs. The Heaney is usually very busy so it's advisable to get in early if you really need something from there. The Seamus Heaney Library is open 24 hours a day in the weeks before and during examinations.

The Science Library is a short distance from the Main Site between the Malone & Stranmillis Roads close to the Ashby building. It mainly caters for staff and students in Science and Engineering faculities.

There is a new Medical Library on the Royal Victoria Hospital site with supplementary facilities at the Belfast City Hospital.

Shops

Belfast has recently become quite the hub for shopping activity. Now that the new 'Victoria Square' has opened the centre of Belfast has been transformed. It holds the everyday names such as H&M, River Island and a new flasgship TopShop as well as I think irelands very first House of Fraser department store. It's sure to cater for everybody's shopping needs.

Restaurants

By virtue of the fact that Northern Ireland is cheaper than most of the mainland, you're going to find loads of great deals here - Botanic avenue has a fairly decent range of places..several chip/kebab/pizza places, The Other Place, a great little restaurant that does 99p ulster fries monday-friday....Harry Ramsden, Subway, Oddles of Noodles (new) and Maggie Mays which you will, at some point, go to. No two ways about it. Big portions, very reasonable prices.

Stranmillis direction yields a few more chippies, cafes and a few nice restaurants, with prices that aren't too outrageous. Malone Road, of course, has the Bot, The streat (healthy fast food, apparently) and some more delights. Go far and wide with your cullinary searches - there are lots of gems to find in greater Belfast.

Banks

Main banks include: Ulster Bank, Northern Bank, Bank of Ireland, First Trust, Abbey National, HSBC, and Halifax

Transport

Metro services run throughout belfast to the outskirts of the city from about 6am -11pm Wanting to go out of belfast? Ulsterbus provide services to almost every town in Nortehrn Ireland from the Europa buscentre in belfast. Northern Ireland railways run trains to certain places in Belfast. Great for a student wanting to get from A to B faster than the merto buses can take them. They offer a student discount card. In west belfast black taxis are also a popular option.

Local area

Queens is situated near the hustle and bustle of the capital (Belfast). As such it is quite an urban area however is in a leafy part, botantic gardens is a must- see for all and is at the back of Queens.

The atmosphere of the local area is dependent on whether the uni term is on or not but if it is loud.
