Christianity

The worlds biggest religion. The Roman Catholic Church, led by the Pope in the Vatican, is the largest group, with over 1 billion members world wide. The current Pope is Benedict XVI.

Christianity is followed the world over with Europe and the Americas having the largest concentrations of Christians.

It is the largest religion in the UK, with around 78% of people saying they were Christians in the 2001 UK census.

In the UK the main Christian Church is the Church of England - an Anglican Church. It was founded by King Henry VIII in 1534 when it broke away from the Roman Catholic Church.

The Queen is officially the head of the Church of England, though the Archbishop of Canterbury is the most senior Bishop (current Rowan Williams). The second most senior bishop is the Archbishop of York (currently John Sentamu).
