Essay Phrases for the Writing Exam

  • Meines Erachtens - In my estimation
  • Ich würde vorschlagen, dass - I would suggest that (Subjunctive!!)

Grammar Points for the Writing Exam

  • ich bin der Meinung, dass... - I am of the opinion that..
  • meiner Meinung nach... - In my opinion...
  • es wäre toll... - It would be great
  • es wäre eine Chance/Gelegenheit - It would be a chance/opportunity
  • um dieses Ziel zu erreichen - In order to reach this goal
  • ich habe vor... - Ich intend to
  • in jeder Hinsicht - In hindsight
  • deswegen/deshalb - Because of this
  • stattdessen - instead of this
  • trotz (+ gen.) - inspite of
  • während (+gen, although the dative is sometimes used) - during
  • obwohl - although
  • bis zu einem gewissen Grad - to a certain degree
  • im Gegenteil - in contrast
  • im Gegensatz zu... - in contrast to
  • folglich - consequently
  • im Vergleich zu (or mit) - in comparison to/with

You also have to be prepared to write to a variety of people (it could be Du, Sie formal, sie plural)

Informal

  • Liebe F/Lieber M - dear
  • Du & Dein (with caps if letter/email, although this is now becoming rarer) - you & yours
  • Viele Grüsse/schreib mir bald - best wishes/write back soon

Formal

  • Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren - ladies or gentlemen

According to my teachers there's almost always a question on the reading paper about love/relationships... Liebeskummer and all that sort of stuff. [Your teacher's wrong] [Yeah, I second that][I think your teacher's just love-obsessed and hopeful ;)]
