Revision:Acid-Base Character of Group 4 Oxides

From The Student Room

TSR Wiki > Study Help > Subjects and Revision > Revision Notes > Chemistry > Acid-Base Character of Group 4 Oxides

Down Group 4

  • The metallic character increases
  • The +2 oxidation state gets more stable and the +4 oxidation state less stable

Acid Base reactions of Group 4 Oxides

CO2

Weakly Acidic

\mathsf{CO_2 + H_2O \longrightarrow H_2CO_3}

SiO2

Acidic

\mathsf{SiO_2 + 2NaOH \longrightarrow 2Na_2SiO_3 + H_2O}

SnO and SnO2

Amphoteric

As an acid: \mathsf{SnO + 2NaOH + H_2O \longrightarrow Na_2Sn(OH)_4}

As a base: \mathsf{SnO + 2HCl \longrightarrow SnCl_2 + H_2O}

\mathsf{SnO_2 + 4HCl \longrightarrow SnCl_4 + 2H_2O}

PbO and PbO2

Amphoteric

As a base: \mathsf{PbO + 2HCl \longrightarrow PbCl_2 + H_2O}

As an acid: \mathsf{PbO + NaOH + H_2O \longrightarrow Na_2Pb(OH)_4}

As a base (at room temperature): \mathsf{PbO_2 + 4HCl \longrightarrow PbCl_2 + Cl_2 + H_2O}
