Regional Surveys of Roman Settlement and agriculture

Social evolution can be examined through the study of settlement patterns and the manner in which resources of the land were exploited.

Field survey: political problems of access as well as problems of making generalisations from small samples. Strength provide large amounts of information unavailable elsewhere few historical sources.

Should not use archaeology solely to back up already certain historical facts archaeology judges in its own right.

Pirenne debate impact Islam on Europe debate raged using the same Historical documents but different interpretations. Hodges and Whitehouse use archaeological evidence to discuss question.
