Revision:Bottling Plant and Control Systems

Control systems are widely used in industry because:

  • Many processes used in industry are very complicated and can work very quickly
  • They help maintain the quality of the product and reduce waste
  • The process can run continuously
  • The conditions in the process can be monitored and kept between set levels to improve efficiency
  • Yields can be improved
  • Maintenance and repair times can be reduced because warning signs and safety systems can be introduced.

Describe in your own words how the bottles could be filled

Using a control system on a timer, after the time taken for the bottle to be filled with the liquid is calculated, a timer could be set to fill the bottle for this amount of time then stop, leaving the bottle full with the correct amount of liquid.

Make a list of 7 items, which could be put into the bottle

  • Shampoo
  • Drinks
  • Moisturiser
  • Nail polish remover
  • Mascara
  • Perfume
  • Hair gel

Look at the list of reasons why control systems are used in industry, and for each reason explain how it can be applied to the bottling plant

Many processes used in industry are very complicated and can work very quickly – Can be bottled quicker. They help maintain the quality of the product and reduce waste – With less waste money is being saved. The process can run continuously – You can get long running hours on a small work force because not many operators are needed so they can work shifts.

The conditions in the process can be monitored and kept between set levels to improve efficiency – You are able to monitor things such as how much is in the bottles and keep them between set levels. Yields can be improved – Less product wastage, for example over filling of bottles, and also because of the quicker speed of the process.

Maintenance and repair times can be reduced because warning signs and safety systems can be introduced – You can set limits to not allow the machine to do anything abnormal.

Give as many reasons as possible why the correct amount of liquid has to be put into the bottle, both for the company and for other parties

If too much liquid is put into the bottle, it is a waste of stock and money for the company; also it could overflow out of the bottle making a mess. If too little is put in people purchasing the bottles would be displeased and possibly complain about there not being enough in the bottle, which would give the company a bad reputation. The buyer would also not re-order from the company.

Why is it important to fill the bottles as quickly as possible?

So it saves time, the quicker the bottles are filled, the more bottles can be filled in the time available, which will earn the company more money.
