Chlorine is a greenish yellow gas. It is increasing in demand since the need for PVC’s is becoming greater. This element is mainly obtained by the electrolysis of aqueous sodium Chloride. In 1996 over 50 metric tons of Chlorine was produced, with America making just over a quarter of this. A Swedish scientist, called C.W. Scheele discovered chlorine in 1774. It will nearly combine with as many elements as Fluorine, and can be used for a huge variety of purposes. Such as bleach, disinfectant and it was used as a poison gas in World War I.
