- Civtates administrative centres – landed aristocracy encouraged to take par I city life – focus long distance exchanges, market activity – late empire economic and administrative role declined and roles as fortress and Christian centre increased.
- State declining thus administration does, wealth and power of the state and specialised economy, aristocrats moving away from the city – hardly surprising that many towns declined or disappeared – core reasons declined. Church did stay however
- Continuity is location and name conceal fundamental changes in function see London for example
- Near East – colonnaded streets transformed into denser suqs. Both suitable for trading, but only Roman serve as function to serve as controlled venues for the display of civic munificence and civic pride.
Conclusion
Only really answerable when no town at all existed – rare. Life continued in most places, but at differing levels o old way. Best to examine constant trends. Continuity, development or break??
