  • Innovators - seek power in order to achieve some future goal. They are prepared to risk unpopularity in order to achieve that goal. The goal is not necessarily formulated and agreed by their party. It bears the personal imprint of the innovator.

  • Reformers - also seek power in order to achieve some future goal. But, this goal has been previously formulated and agreed by their party. The goal does not necessarily bear their personal imprint.

  • Egoists - seek power simply in order to exercise and retain power. They are, in other words, motivated by self-regard, not by ideology. Since their main aim is to retain power for themselves, they are principally concerned with the present and not with some future goal.

  • Balancers - seek power to ensure that peace and stability are maintained – both within their party and within society as a whole. Balancers fall into two sub-categories – those who do not actively seek office tend to be compromise candidates in leadership elections.
