Revision:Flow Charts

From The Student Room

TSR Wiki > Study Help > Subjects and Revision > Revision Notes > Mathematics > Flow Charts

Flow charts are a diagrammatic representation of a set of instructions which must be followed. Flow charts are made up of different boxes, which each have different functions.

(Diagram/image missing from here showing example of a flow chart.

The flow chart above says think of a number, add 5 and multiply by 2. If the number is negative, make it positive.

Flow charts are usually equivalent to some function. In the example above, the flow chart is equivalent to the function \displaystyle f(x) = | 2(x + 5) |.

(the vertical lines around 2(x + 5) means take the magnitude of the answer).

Comments

This article needs a diagram to illustrate what a flow chart is. It also needs to be much more comprehensive, perhaps by showing more examples and leading on to more uses of flow charts. I also don't think it would be a problems to take the article right back to basics for foundation candidates.

Perhaps distinction between these function flow charts and general 'activity' flow charts is needed (as the latter probably form part of some A Level module and are totally different).
