  • Hitler saw Goring as excellent propaganda; gave the Party credibility



  • 1928; elected to Reichstag as part of 12 Nazi seats
  • 1932; becomes Reichstag President
  • 1934; Head of Gestapo
  • Seen as Hitler’s No. 2
  • 1934; Minister of Prussian Interior; Prussians favoured Goring to Hitler; who they didn’t understand
  • Alan Bullock: “after Hitler, Goring was the most popular Nazi”
  • With Himmler, directed Night of Long Knives; June 1934, to get rid of enemy Rohm
  • 1936; outmanoeuvres Schact with loyalty to Nazi ideals; initiates 4 Year Plan based on rearmament
  • Played a leading role in Nazification of economy
  • Established close personal links with I G Farben
  • In 1938, helped engineer the dismissal of General Blomberg; rewarded by becoming a Supreme-Commander of Armed Forces
  • Played leading role in preparation for the Anschluss in March 1938
