1st Law

  • An object will stay in a state of rest or in uniform motion unless acted on by an external force.


2nd Law

  • The force acting on a body is directly proportional to the mass of the body and its acceleration and is in the direction of the acceleration.
  • Force = Mass x Acceleration


For A Level maths and physics the following may also be useful:

The resultant force acting on a body is directly proportional to the rate of change of momentum of the body, and acts in the direction of the momentum change.

This can be mathematically notated as F = ma, which is equal to F = \frac{m(v-u)}{t}, as a = \frac{v-u}{t}.


3rd Law

  • To every action force, there is an equal and opposite reaction force.
