Revision:Past Tenses (Spanish)

From The Student Room

TSR Wiki > Study Help > Subjects and Revision > Revision Notes > Spanish > Past Tenses (Spanish)

The perfect tense is when you want to say you 'have' done something, i.e I have eaten, you have played. In Spanish it is formed using the present tense of 'haber' and the past participle of the verb you wish to use.

Haber

yo he
tu has
el/ella/usted ha
nosotros hemos
vosotros habeis
ellos/ellas/ustedes han

The past participle is formed depending on the ending of the verb:

-er: -ido
-ir: -ido
-ar: -ado

Examples

comer: comido
bailar: bailado
vivir: vivido

There are, however, some irregular past participles. Some common ones are:

abrir (to open) - abierto
cubrir (to cover) - cubierto
decir (to say) - dicho
escribir (to write) - escrito
hacer (to do) - hecho
romper (to break) - roto
ver (to see) - visto
volver (to return) - vuelto

So, for example the verb comer in the perfect tense:

yo he comido
tu has comido
el/ ella/ usted ha comido
nosotros hemos comido
vosotros habeis comido
ellos/ellas/ustedes han comido
