The perfect tense is when you want to say you 'have' done something, i.e I have eaten, you have played. In Spanish it is formed using the present tense of 'haber' and the past participle of the verb you wish to use.
Haber
- yo he
- tu has
- el/ella/usted ha
- nosotros hemos
- vosotros habeis
- ellos/ellas/ustedes han
The past participle is formed depending on the ending of the verb:
- -er: -ido
- -ir: -ido
- -ar: -ado
Examples
- comer: comido
- bailar: bailado
- vivir: vivido
There are, however, some irregular past participles. Some common ones are:
- abrir (to open) - abierto
- cubrir (to cover) - cubierto
- decir (to say) - dicho
- escribir (to write) - escrito
- hacer (to do) - hecho
- romper (to break) - roto
- ver (to see) - visto
- volver (to return) - vuelto
So, for example the verb comer in the perfect tense:
- yo he comido
- tu has comido
- el/ ella/ usted ha comido
- nosotros hemos comido
- vosotros habeis comido
- ellos/ellas/ustedes han comido
