The passé simpleUsageThe passé simple (or preterite in English) replaces the passé composé in high register, written texts. It is most commonly seen nowadays in literature, and sometimes in academic work. The tense is never used in spoken French. ConjugationTo form the passé simple, take the stem of the verb (drop the infinitive ending off, eg. the stem of dormir = dorm) and add the passé simple ending. The terminaisons of the passé simple are : 1st group:

In the case of third conjugation verbs, the letter is generally decided by the ending of the past participle. lire -> lu
