Revision:The Future Tense

Forming the future tense

The future tense in French can be formed in two ways.

Method 1 - using aller

This form of the future tense is a way of saying that the subject is going to do something. To form the simple future:

  1. Take the correct conjugation of aller- je vais, tu vas, il/elle/on va, nous allons, vous allez, ils/elles vont
  2. Take the verb which you wish to express in the future and write the infinitive

For example- Je (1) vais (2) aller à la discothèque - I am going to go to the disco.

Method 2 - adding endings

The second form of the future tense means that the subject will do something. To form this future tense, take the infinitive and add the endings of avoir in the present tense (ai, as, a, ons, ez, ont). However, drop the -e from -re verbs- for example vendre becomes vendr- + appropriate ending.

For example - Je mangerai une pomme - I will eat an apple.

The following stems are irregular, and therefore do not follow the above pattern:

avoir- aur-
courir- courr-
devoir- devr-

valoir- vaudr-
venir- viendr-
