Main uses of areas in national parks:
Limestone
Other uses: scenery, recreation activities in caves
Conflicts
Quarrying
- The minerals being quarried are non-renewable resources
- Most of the stone is transported by heavy lorries on roads often already busy with tourists and local traffic
- Quarries produce a great deal of noise and dust
- Quarries leave the landscape scarred.
Tourism
- Tourist traffic causes a great deal of congestion
- Demand for car parking exceeds amount of car parking available resulting in parking on grass verges.
- Footpaths are eroded
- Litter detracts from the appearance of the area and can harm livestock and wildlife
- Tourists sometimes wander over cultivated land, worry sheep and damage walls
- House prices increase, partly because of incomers, and partly because of demand for second homes
- Young people are forced to move away because of the increase in house prices
Uses of Upland Areas - Glacial Erosion
Tourism - excellent scenery attracts tourists
Recreation - including hill walking, skiing, etc.
Forestry - coniferous trees can tolerate the shorter growing season, poorer climate etc. and can be planted on steeper slopes that are useless for building
HEP - deep valleys with few people living in them can ideally be drowned and dammed for a power scheme.
