Stewardship
- It is an Old Testament idea.
- The world is God’s creation therefore it is sacred.
- Humans are created in God’s image; they have a special place in God’s creation.
- Humans are to work as caring stewards or managers of this creation. They should look after it, because it is on trust from God to whom they are responsible.
- Work with not against nature.
- Partners of creation, not Lords of creation.
- The Protestant Church agreed to take steps to minimise pollution and the usage of the world’s energy resources. They also agreed to reduce damage to plant and animals, and control population.
- The Roman Catholic Church teaches that people have a responsibility to think about what we consume. We should plan for future generations, and think about the impact on developing nations from the richer countries.
Hunger and Disease
- The Parable of the Sheep and Goat: On Judgement Day, Jesus will come down to separate the good people from the bad. The goats represent the bad, and the sheep the good. He will tell them about how they helped or did not help him when he came disguised as a poor stranger who asked for food, shelter and clothing. The sheep who helped him will go to heaven, and the goats who didn’t will go to hell.
- It is part of Christian duty to help the less fortunate.
- They would do this to put their beliefs into action.
- It is also part of being a good steward.
- Because everyone is made in the image of God, everyone should be treated equally.
- Just like the Old Testament prophets who spoke out against injustice and told people to care for the poor.
Friends of the Earth
- It is a non-Christian organisation which wants to help preserve and restore the environment, as well as promote renewable energy resources and protect the earth and all its creatures.
- It was set up in 1969 in the USA, although it is now a global organisation.
- They campaign, protest and pressure politicians on issues such as deforestation, global warming, whaling etc.
Christian Aid
- It is a Christian organisation which helps to fight poverty in poor countries.
- They fund and help with projects such as agricultural projects which involve improving land, crops and livestock.
- They also help and fund technical projects which give the poor training in skills and trades.
- They try to help the poor help themselves.
- They also raise awareness of poverty, and persuade the developed nations to share their resources with the not so developed.
- They also raise money to help during events like Christian Aid Week.
