Introduction

The Sussex university campus is based near the village of Falmer four miles from the centre of Brighton. It is the only university in England to have a campus based entirely in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The Sussex campus was designed by Sir Basil Spence who drew influence from everyday objects to influence his original design for the campus. For instance the library design is based on an open book, Falmer house is meant to look like a camera and the Meeting House is designed to look like a candle. The campus while modern still has many green areas and has been kept up to date through refurbishment over the last forty years.

Falmer House

This is the home of the University of Sussex student union and where you will find many of the student support services which are offered at Sussex university. It is the first building you will see when you enter the Sussex uni campus.

A view of Falmer House through the trees. Sussex is a really green campus and there are many large areas of grass for students to sit and relax.

The John Maynard Smith Building

The John Maynard Smith Building is named after the well known geneticist and one of the founding members of Sussex university John Maynard Smith. This building is where life sciences are taught at Sussex university.

The Library

The library at Sussex university has everything that you will need to help you with your degree. Generations of students have passed on the story that it was designed to look like a book held open. There has been much debate and discussion (mostly between students returning from a night out late at night) as to whether it actually does. In front of the library is Fulton court (colloquially known as 'Library square'), this is where all major protests occur, hardly a week goes by when there isn't someone there. There are also often fairs and markets set up (as you can see in the below picture).

The Meeting House

The Sussex University Meeting house is possibly the most unique building on campus. It is spiritual center of Sussex University and where people of all faiths can go to pray, meet and meditate. The chapel is beautiful on the inside with candle and stained glass creating an amazing atmosphere.

Brighton and Sussex Medical School Buildings

The Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) opened its doors in 2003. It has buildings on both the Sussex University and the Brighton University (Falmer) Campus. The Buildings on the Sussex Campus are used for the scientific teaching and dissection teaching of the medical course. If you would like to know more about BSMS information can be found here.
