FacilitiesLibrariesThe university Learning Centre has a wide range of library, IT and web-based resources all under one roof in a comfortable and modern environment. Students have access to the latest technologies, books, journals, audio-visual materials and multi-media collections, and an expanding set of electronic resources. If that’s not enough, as a Leeds Trinity student you’ll also be able to use the libraries of the University of Leeds – amongst the best in the country. IT and computingRegistered students benefit from full internet access and email services with student IT facilities available in the Learning Centre, open 24 hours a day. In addition, over half of the university accommodation allows you to connect your own PC or laptop to the Leeds Trinity network and to the internet. SportsStudents also benefit from the superb brand new sports and fitness centre just opened in November 2007. Whether you are interested in keeping fit for fun, staying healthy, or playing sport, you’ll find all you need for individual fitness, to join classes, or be part of a sports team. HealthcareStudents living on or close to the campus can register via Student Health with the GP at the local New Croft Surgery. The GP and registered nurse hold regular surgeries at our campus Health Centre during term time. Two qualified (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy registered) counsellors work on campus during term time. Access to an off campus counselling service is offered during vacations. The counsellors provide an understanding and caring atmosphere in which you can talk confidentially about anything that is worrying you. ShopsShopaholics already know you can’t beat Leeds for sheer breadth of retail experience. From the individuality of The Corn Exchange, to the traditional grandeur of The Victoria Quarter, to the up market designer chic of Harvey Nichols, there really is something for every taste and budget. Eating on campusThe dining room serves a range of cooked meals including fast food, snacks and salads. If you’re short of time, then bar snacks are also available in the Students’ Union HQ at lunchtime and in the evenings so you’ll never go hungry! The dining room also sells a range of goods including stationery, confectionery, soft drinks, toiletries, newspapers and magazines. BanksA cash machine is available in the main building on campus and you will also find branches of the major banks in Horsforth or in Leeds city centre. TransportLeeds Trinity has great transport links – it’s easily accessible by road, there’s a railway station ten minutes’ walk from campus and plenty of buses from Leeds and Bradford stop directly outside the main entrance. Leeds Bradford International Airport is only five minutes away by car. Careers serviceThere is a consistently high employment rate among Trinity and All Saints graduates. The university have a professional and dedicated careers service who will provide you with advice and information to help you choose and develop a successful career path. The careers information room is a good point of call for researching different careers, employers throughout the UK, working or studying abroad, postgraduate study and voluntary work. There are dedicated staff who will guide you through your career planning and job search and the careers team work closely with academic departments to make sure you develop the skills and knowledge you need to help you make the right decisions about your future. If you’re a budding entrepreneur, the careers service can also provide advice and information on how to start a business or work on a selfemployed or freelance basis. There are lots of opportunities to improve your enterprise skills as well as find out more about how to work foryourself successfully and access to funds to help you on your way. Part-time jobsMany students choose to work part-time during their studies to help with finances and gain relevant work experience. The campus Jobshop provides information on local voluntary, part-time and vacation work in a variety of sectors, from office work and telesales to bar and retail jobs. Leeds Trinity place a great value upon voluntary work, and this is reflected in the student activities and programmes that flourish. Spring 2007 saw the launch of a volunteer programme designed to support and enhance student volunteering. This fosters involvement in fundraising activities, one off challenge events, virtual volunteering and work with local, regional and national charities. All of the students who take part in these projects find them rewarding and challenging. Trinity Sports Volunteering (TSV) is a student volunteer group that provides the resources and support to develop sporting talent and ability within the community. Leeds Trinity has developed strong links with school sport co-ordinators in primary and secondary schools and gets involved in a wide range of sports. Joining the Trinity Sports Volunteering team allows the opportunity to gain voluntary work experience by assisting at sporting events, adding valuable skills and experience to your CV. By taking on four voluntary sessions throughout the year, students are entitled to reduced (and some free) rates on coaching courses. Religious facilitiesThe Chaplaincy Centre includes both a chapel and a multi-faith prayer space, which means whatever your faith or belief, there’s a place where you can pray, worship, or find some time for peace and quiet. SocialBars, pubs and clubsAt the moment, the live music scene in Leeds is probably the best in the country and is buzzing with top bands that regularly play in Leeds venues or nearby Bradford, York or Sheffield. There are many outdoor gigs including the massive Leeds Festival and on top of this, many events are staged in local parks during the summer so you can mosh away to your heart’s content. Leeds has one of the best club scenes in the country, and it just keeps getting better. Many clubs hold regular student nights so you can dance away pretty much every night of the week. EventsFrom museums and galleries, to film, art, opera and theatre, Leeds really does have it all. Many of the city’s cultural sights and venues are free or discounted for students so it couldn’t be easier to broaden your horizons. If you’re a proper culture vulture then Opera North and The Northern Ballet are based in Leeds and the West Yorkshire Playhouse has earned a reputation as the ‘National Theatre of the North’. Clubs and societiesThere are many clubs and societies which you could join. Sports teams include football, rugby (league and union), hockey, basketball and volleyball for men and women. Women’s netball and men’s cricket are also on offer, as are athletics and golf. There is also a sign language society, journalism society, psychology and even a trampoline club if you simply want to bounce a lot. AccommodationIn your first year you might decide to live on campus where all of the halls of residence are located. With ten halls of residence on campus and close to 530 furnished rooms available, you can choose catered or self-catered facilities with some halls of residence providing ensuite facilities. Over 50% of the rooms have internet access, and all rooms are within easy access of the 24/7 computer facilities. ResidencesRipon and Whitby HallsRipon and Whitby Halls (self-catered accommodation) have kitchens fitted with modern cooking appliances and plenty of storage space. If you don’t fancy cooking for yourself, you can buy a meal in the dining room using cash or student swipe card. Shops and supermarkets are all within easy reach of campus. Trinity CloseTrinity Close (self-catered, ensuite) was new for 2007 and comprises 14 blocks of student accommodation, with six study bedrooms in each. All rooms are ensuite, and every room has internet access and each block has a fully fitted communal kitchen/ dining area. Kirkstall Hall and Shrewsbury, Norwich, Rievaulx, Fountains and St Albans HallsKirkstall hall (catered, ensuite) and Shrewsbury, Norwich, Rievaulx, Fountains and St Albans halls (catered, standard) all have a shared kitchenette area (with basic facilities) where you can make yourself a drink and snack, and the dining room where you eat your meals is only a short walk away. The dining room provides a range of hot meals (including vegetarian options), fast food, sandwiches and salads. Meals can be purchased using your student swipe card. Disabled accommodationSpecially adapted accommodation in both catered and self-catered halls is offered for disabled residents. The Disability Services Coordinator will discuss your requirements with you prior to you completing an application for accommodation. Private sectorLeeds has a thriving student population and many students live off campus in one of the popular areas of Horsforth, Headingley or Kirkstall. All of these locations have great public transport links with Leeds Trinity. Some first year students and most second, third and fourth years live in rented accommodation off campus close by in the leafy areas of Horsforth or Kirkstall. Or if you prefer, the student hotbeds of Headingley and Hyde Park provide a lively and accessible experience. It’s worth noting that some students live with their families and travel from all over Yorkshire to study with us – Leeds is very well served by a good motorway network that means travel from slightly further a field is definitely an option. Leeds Trinity & All Saints and Leeds Trinity Union have a partnership arrangement with UNIPOL student homes (www.unipol.leeds.ac.uk) which provides our students who live off campus with services to ensure they choose appropriate accommodation within the private sector. The accommodation complies with the 2004 Housing Act and the landlord adheres to the ANUK accreditation scheme. www.anuk.org.uk Students' UnionWhen you start on a course at Leeds Trinity you automatically become a member of LTU (Leeds Trinity Students’ Union). LTU represents the needs of each student and aims to create an inclusive, vibrant and open students’ union. The Union delivers activities, entertainment and events and ensure that the student’s voice gets heard at every level. The Students’ Union building is home to HQ, the on campus bar, complete with games and vending machines, making it an excellent place to start your evening or dance until the small hours. LTU organises regular entertainment on and off the campus and has a wide range of sporting and social societies. At the start of the year you will receive an entertainment calendar highlighting all the events. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, then students are encouraged to contact the Union to discuss setting up an appropriate society. Also on tap is support and guidance on a range of issues such as finance, health, accommodation and your academic studies. If you are struggling with anything at all, the Union exists to help and is readily accessible. The Students’ Union has three paid full-time sabbatical officers and a dedicated team who support them in achieving their goals and aspirations for the year. The famous ‘Freshers’ Week’ provides a full week of entertainment to help you settle into life as a student, including nights on and off campus with live music, DJs and a celebrity guest, and the week’s festivities are brought to a lavish conclusion with the Freshers’ Ball, which is not to be missed. Once Freshers’ Week is over the entertainment continues with regular nights of live music and comedy, DJs, quizzes, bingo, and open mic comedy sessions. Every Monday and Wednesday, the Union arranges regular transport to sample the delights of the best city centre nightclubs – disco divas, book your places now! EnvironmentLeeds Trinity takes it environmental responsibilities very seriously and the university was recently 'highly commended' for its contribution to environmental issues at the Green Gown Awards. ArchitectureLeeds Trinity has a distinctive campus in an attractive location. Recent improvements include the new Andrew Keane Learning Centre, Sports Centre and Fitness Suite and Trinity Close student residences. The university has plans to further develop buildings to enhance the appearance of the campus and to meet the expectations of the students. Local areaLeeds Trinity’s campus is in Horsforth, North West of Leeds and a short bus or train ride from Leeds city centre and the popular student areas of Headingley and Hyde Park. Horsforth has all you need for your day-to-day needs (banks, supermarkets and newsagents) and the odd night out (pubs, bars and restaurants). Teaching qualityLeeds Trinity received the best possible outcome from the latest Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Institutional Audit Report (2003). There are also have ‘good’ Ofsted scores for all our primary teacher-training programmes; 100% of newly qualified Primary Education teachers surveyed who trained here rated their training as very good, good or adequate. According to the National Student Survey (2006) Leeds Trinity History students are officially the “most satisfied” History students in the country!
