University College, Durham

From The Student Room

University College, affectionately known as Castle is the oldest college of the University of Durham. Founded in 1823 when Bishop Van Mildert donated his residence to become student halls, Durham became England's 3rd university.

As the nickname indicates, the college is indeed based in Durham Castle, parts of which are over 900 years old. The castle, along with the cathedral across the other side of Palace Green, is a world heritage site. All meals for resident students are taken in the castle's great hall and entertainment is in the Norman Undercroft (Undie) bar (average price of a pint = £1.35).

As a first year in Castle there is an approx. 50/50 chance that you will get a room in the castle itself, and you will most likely be sharing if you are one of the lucky 50% who get a room there. The college has 3 other accommodation blocks near to the castle where other students live. There is Bailey Court, between Palace Green and Hatfield College, Owengate which is 3 houses on the street leading up to Palace Green, and the recently refurbished Moatside Court which is situated towards town on Saddler St (but still only a 2 min walk from college!). If you specify you want a single room, you will more than likely be in one of these blocks.

Castle has a great community spirit, there's always loads going on - there are 2 choirs, an orchestra, 2 theatre companies and a myriad of sports teams. In the Epiphany term there is an Arts Week, and after exams in Easter term there is the famous Bavarian Cultural Exchange and the magnificent Castle Day - a celebration of the founding of the college. Aside from this, there are romal meals twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Academic gowns are worn over smart clothing (suit and tie for men, smart trousers/skirt for women, no denim), grace is said and food is served at the table.

Castle has 3 balls a year - in 1st term there is Ladies' Night (the girls invite the boys), which takes place in college. Then in 2nd term there is the Informal Ball which usually takes place outside of college. Finally, after exams there is the world famous June Ball- a 12 hour extravaganza of fine dining and entertainment for 400 lucky guests.

The college JCR has its own website for potential applicants to find out more about it and see pictures!
