University for the Creative Arts offers pre-degree, undergraduate and postgraduate courses in art, design, architecture, media and communications. Originally formed as an alliance between the Kent Institute of Art and Design (KIAD) and the Surrey Institute of Art and Design (SIAD), it was the University College for the Creative Arts until September 2008, when it was granted full university status. The university has five campuses: Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone and Rochester.

Facilities

Libraries

There is an LLC (Library and Learning Centre) at each UCA campus providing books, journals, DVDs, videos and more. Each course has its own Academic Liaison Librarian to help and advise students on whats resources are available to use.

Students have access to:

236,000 print and electronic books and exhibition catalogues 12,000 print and electronic journals 20,000 videos, DVDs, slides, audio resources and digital games Over 40 online databases, image collections and newspaper archives


LLC opening times vary between sites, but during term-time all LLCs are open in the evening and some are also open at the weekend.

IT and computing

IT suites located in each campus's LLC, containing over 240 PCs and Mac's in total. Additional facilities are available in dedicated course media suites. Standard packages on all machines include:

  • Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Adobe Creative Suite software (Illustrator, In Design and Photoshop)
  • Adobe Acrobat

Wireless network access across all UCA campuses with a good signal available in all libraries and some other areas. If you need to use the wireless network and don't have a laptop you can always borrow one from the LLC.

Galleries and Museums

Galleries situated at each campus offer a range of exhibitions throughout the year, and space for students to display their work [1]

The Crafts Study Centre, based at Farnham is home to internationally-renowned collections of modern British craft and inspiring exhibitions by leading artist-makers. [2]

Welfare

Student Services offers provides the following at each UCA campus:

Student Wardens in all accommodation, drop in doctors surgery

And advice on: Private accommodation, Financial issues, Legal issues, Student counselling services, Disability support, Study skills and dyslexia support, International student support, Chaplaincy – advice and information for those of all faiths or none

Healthcare

Each campus has a drop in doctors surgery. Student Services also provide student counselling services, disability support and studyskills and dyslexia support to name a few. [3]

The Job Shop on the Student Union website lists a number of jobs available on campus and in the local area. The Careers section of the UCA website has an extensive list of part-time jobs, many of which are related to the creative arts meaning you can gain relevant experience as well as make some extra cash. Clubs and societies

There are lots of clubs and societies for you to get involved with and meet new people and if not you can easily set one up.

Clubs: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Capoeira, Football, Netball, Rugby, Snow sports, Tennis, Thai Boxing, Volleyball, Yoga

Societies: Break dance, Christian Union, Cinema, Drama, Greek and Cypriot, LGBT, Life Drawing, Street Dance, Salsa, Poker, Musicians, Tech Crew, Student Magazine

Accommodation

Accommodation policy

Allocation of UCA accommodation is based on distance from the campus except in cases where students have a special need.

Students not placed in UCA accommodation are given assistance to find private accommodation.

Facilities

University accommodation ranges from on campus halls of residence to University managed flats and houses. All accommodation is self-catering, and the majority is in single study bedrooms. A number of rooms across all campuses have en-suite facilities.

Residences

Canterbury: 57 rooms on campus (all ensuite) 107 at Hotham Court (20 ensuite) 25 min walk 24 at Riverdale House (all ensuite) 25 min walk

Epsom: 59 rooms on campus (all ensuite) 28 at Ashley Road (shared bathroom 1-3) 5 min walk 60 at Woodcote Side (shared bathroom 1-3) 20 min walk

Farnham: 343 rooms in Student Village on campus (13 ensuite) 29 rooms in Main Hall on campus (shared bathroom). Shared bedrooms also available.

Maidstone: 134 rooms at Westree Court (all ensuite) 10 min walk

Rochester: 214 rooms in Doust Way (all ensuite) 5 min walk

Private sector

If you don't get a place in Univerity accommodation you will be sent a register of privately rented accommodation, which can also be accessed on-line.

You can also opt to have your contact details added to go onto a "Sharer's List" of students looking to share privately rented accommodation. This enables new students to get into groups to look for a student house together.

Applying to University for the Creative Arts

If you are applying for 2010 entry will only be able to apply through Route A. The deadline is 15th January.

Interviews

UCA interviews most but not all students who apply. Sometimes admission staff decide to offer a place solely by looking at an application, or after setting some extra work. Check beforehand whether you will need to go to an interview or not, otherwise assume you'll have to go for interview.

Portfolios

Most UCA courses require a portfolio as part of the application. Portfolios should include work that:

  • Shows an aptitude for the course you are applying for.
  • Demonstrates your passion for your chosen subject, especially for: Fashion courses, Film, Animation, Craft
  • Shows your ability to write, particularly for courses like: Journalism, Film production, Fashion promotion and imaging, Fashion management and marketing
