University of California System
Held in fairly high regard among US residents, the University of California system is composed of 10 public universities scattered across the state. The individual universities vary in prestige, although as of 2011, eight of them are ranked in the top 100 universities in the US, according to the 37th edition of The Insider's Guide to the Colleges. Each university has its own unique atmosphere and, to an extent, emphasis on various aspects of undergrad life.
